"you know Victor Hugo - the appearance is often the morals"

Fangirl is also fangirl (whose other internet window is currently the Cromwell preface so that she can properly debate the correlation between Hugo's god, the sublime, and the grotesque over at the Abaissé boards) and would like submit Quasimodo and Phoebus as counterexamples.

Really, it's no big deal; I was just feeling nitpicky about that the OP was taking the above passage literally. Grantaire is not physically a toad watching Enjolras-the-bird nor does he have malformed vertebrae. It follows that he isn't necessarily physically small or weak. Ugly? Certainly.

Sorry to be anon. I'm just too lazy to actually make an lj account. :)

Hee, another Victor Hugo fangirl. Always fun!

Though I always thought Quasimodo and Phoebus were supposed to be pointedly counter to that, though. In Les Mis, Victor Hugo seems to go very much with the appearance having Meaning. Though of course having done research on 19th century republicanism (yay history major, always useful for fandom!), Enjolras is actually a pretty good standard example of the ideal they had at the time...

I don't think the OP was taking it literally - I actually read it as them making a joke on it being "yaoi" (thereby making it more exaggerated than it would otherwise be), though my guess is as good as yours.

At any rate, Enjolras and Grantaire are supposed to be opposites; one could read into that the tall:short, strong:weak, etc. I know it's symbolic, but you know Victor Hugo. He's not one to feel ashamed at hitting the reader over the head with a gigantic clue-by-four. One of the reason I love him so.

...but now that you mention it, frog-prince!Grantaire and winged!Enjolras would be hilarious.

Clue-by-four? *snickers*

This is the part where I ask you if you've ever been over to Abaissé and, if you haven't, try to drag you over there. This is the sort of thing we like to argue about. http://abaisse.eta-carinae.net/

Really, the only reason that I cared to dispute the point at all is that we have a member over there who greatly resents the fanon image of gross, weak, unshaven, poorly dressed R. I don't necessarily agree with her but it's a fresh and, in my estimation, very valid perspective.

So perhaps the OP was just making a jab at the conventions of slash and I've been wasting my time, but hey, anything that brings the Hugo fans out of the woodwork is good by me.

Also, is the Enjolraic model unique to the republicans? Virtual look-alikes keep popping up in other books of the age that I've been reading, with Lucien and St. John being the most obvious examples, so I've just taken it as a standard ideal of male beauty. (If there's something to be learned about said republicans here, please don't hold back! There's only so much that I can get out of Harsin's Barricades.)

Give me a break, I've been working tech all week. ^^

Hmm, no, I don't think I've ever been there. Will check it out, though.

I can see that, though in my estimation the fanon image of R is more based off of the single word "drunk" than anything else (mostly because I've never seen a drunkard that gave a damn for his appearance), but then again, I can definitely see her point...

This is true. ^^

Well, there is the obvious tie-in with classics - Apollo was the standard of male Greek beauty, then of Roman beauty (with one key difference, of course! : D ), and the stoical self-controlled youthful type has been popular ever since then. Given the obsession France at that time had with the classics, it probably influenced it. ^^;

God, don't make me dig up my old notes on this subject! Ask me again after summer - my university is holding a class called 'Blood and Ink: Revolutions and Representations' which focuses on 19th century French history and literature exclusively (with, obviously, a huge Victor Hugo test). I'll get back to you with more notes after that. ^^

kl;dfajteha;dsal Blood and Ink DO WANT. That sounds like the most beautiful class ever created. I might have to take you up on the offer of harassing you in a few months about the notes.

Hope to see you on the forums. Not!anon goes by TheHighestPie. :)
