OP
(Anonymous) 2021-11-25 02:36 pm (UTC)(link)Some gemologists do believe the Latin pronunciation to be the original one. And if that were the case, it would make “Peri-doe” more generally correct, with the other regional differences coming after. But that’s still just speculation at this point, so it really is a to-may-to/to-mah-to situation.
And when I mention it bothering me, I mean the show only. Rebecca Sugar and the crew of Steven Universe went with the most traditional English speaking pronunciations of all of the gems, except Peridot and Lapis Lazuli. So it stands out to me, and I think will continue to bug me based on what feels to me like an inconsistency. I don’t mind hearing the gems be pronounced like the show does IRL, which is why I didn’t say anything about whether I shared that opinion outside of the show. Because regional differences in any word or letter are completely fine, and it’s not cool to be rude to anyone based on how they use a different but equally correct pronunciation. Which is why I stated that it was a silly thing to get so bothered by in the show, and why it’s hypocritical that the show’s pronunciation of Lapis Lazuli bugs me less because it feels just as “right” in a regional way. This secret is a nitpick based on this cartoon alone, and the nitpick is based on the show’s inconsistency with regional pronunciations like I said earlier in this comment.
And just to clarify further my position, I did study some gemology in order to work in jewelry stores, but I can definitively say that I’m no actual expert. Both on gems and the storied history behind them, and the origins of how they’re pronounced. I only studied the classes most necessary to work in the field I was interested in, but I would like to study further in the future.
All that to say I’m absolutely not trying to say I’m some objective voice on these matters, and I’m not trying to judge everyone for their different but correct pronunciations. I’m just someone who talks a lot, and I made some bad and oversimplified word choices in this secret trying to make it short enough to be manageable for the awesome secret maker. I also have a bad habit of talking like an overly wordy know-it-all when it comes to how I type online, as well as my tone issues in general. Which is a habit I’m trying to correct, but do admittedly have trouble with.
I want to thank everyone for the responses! This has been a lot of fun to read!
