Favorite Thanksgiving side dishes

(Anonymous) 2021-11-25 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Apparently this is a rather controversial question: what is/are your favorite Thanksgiving side dish(es)?

*In my opinion, there are no wrong answers here, as this holiday is all about special foods and being thankful for that bounty.

I'd agree except for my mom's baked homemade. Delicious.

1. Corn casserole. One of my favorite foods period. So delicious
2. Mashed potatoes
3. salad
4. green beans
5. stuffing (as long as it doesn't have too much celery in it, I hate cooked celery)

I have questions. What is a corn casserole and who is putting celery in stuffing??

Corn casserole is just a delicious dish we've been doing on Thanksgiving in our family for about 10 years now. I'm not entirely sure of the recipe other than it uses 2 cans of regular corn and 2 cans of cream corn. But it is one of the most delicious foods in my opinion. I love it.

My mother has always put celery in stuffing. I hate cooked celery. Most years she only puts a little, but some years there is more than others.

Non-traditional, but my aunt always makes a mushroom polenta that is my favorite part of the meal

Ham. I look forward to the ham more than the turkey. We eat turkey at other times during the year, but we only eat ham on Thanksgiving.

I really love my mom's mashed potatoes so I want to say that but its not something exclusively for the holidays.

So my favorite Thanksgiving side dish would be a tie between the stuffing and green bean casserole.

All of them. Mashed potatoes, green beans, sweet potatoes, stuffing, corn, deviled eggs. I don't even care about the turkey.

Question for Americans: I have heard about this sweet potato casserole that is allegedly a (southern?) Thanksgiving side dish, and how it has sweet potato, sugar and cinnamon and is topped with marshmallows. And I just... are people actually eating this?? And how is this a side dish and not a dessert? I just can't imagine this tasting anything other than sickly sweet...

Re: Favorite Thanksgiving side dishes

One man's sickly sweet is another man's just right. And lots of people make sweet potatoes without marshmallows, or with pecan nuts instead.

The only way my brother will eat a sweet potato is if it is baked, cut in half, and filled with a mix of fresh pineapple, apple, butter, and cinnamon. (A good tablespoon of this mixture is great for one medium sized sweet potato.)

Really tasty, and I should make it again some time.

I eat it as part of dessert with pie, but other people do eat it along with the turkey and stuff. Depending on how you make it, the dish can come out tasting just a bit sweet and not like it's giving you cavities as you eat it.

Funny thing is while its commonly associated with the South the ones who invented the dish were a candy company. In 1917 the Rueckheim brothers wanted to boost their marshmallow sales so they paid Janet McKenzie Hill, founder of founder of the Boston Cooking School Magazine, to produce a cookbook encouraging home cooks to use the marshmallow candy in food dishes.

Just as an aside on if its really a side dish versus dessert -- technically a sweet potato pie and a sweet potato casserole are the same thing really. Its a matter of presentation on when its given out as Sweet Potato Pie is made with white sugar and no topping besides whip cream while Sweet Potato Casserole is made with brown sugar and 'traditionally' have the marshmallows on top or a sort of crumble made of brown sugar and nuts (popular being pecans).

It wasn't traditional in my family, but yeah, it's a thing. The most wtf this is dessert thing I remember from my childhood was my paternal grandma's jello salad--pistachio pudding mix, canned pineapple, gelatin, sour cream, and I think pecans.

Yes my fam made it every year for a long time and I ensure we keep eating every year even though only me and Dad like it. I guess the only reason its not a dessert is that sweet potatoes are supposed to be like really good for you. It tastes super sweet but with my tastebuds I dunno it's just GOOD. Its one of my fave dishes honestly. This year we had nuts in it. That was so gooooood.

Not an American but we had a sweet potato marshmallow casserole as a laugh as a side for turkey and it was a surprising smash hit!
Delicious, and not as sweet as you'd think. I wouldn't have it as a dessert. It fit well with the turkey and gravy but I like mixing sweet and salty.

Stuffing, although I'm picky and have had at least one horrible stuffing experience with my uncle's mother in law's stodgy, salty, goopy stuffing that had to be sliced out of the pan, like bread pudding inexplicably less flavorful than the bread she started with.

Mine has celery, leeks, onions, green and yellow bell pepper, walnuts, pine nuts, homemade cornbread, sourdough, and fresh sage, rosemary, parsley, thyme, and marjoram. And I use vegetarian chicken broth since I don't eat meat.

I didn't make anything this year because my broken tooth won't get fixed until next week so no nuts or crunchy stuff for me. I'll make it for Christmas, though.

So many choices…… best order would be something like

Corn soufflé
Green bean casserole
Stuffing
Deviled eggs
Sweet Potato Casserole
Mashed Potatoes
Cranberry sauce
Waldorf Salad
Rolls

I usually make homemade mashed potatoes w/herbs and garlic.
Scalloped oysters
This year I made cornbread stuffing w/bacon, mushrooms and pecans
I like the deviled egg idea, I've done that for parties before but not Thanksgiving.
My mother used to always insist on making something called spinach pudding which I think only she likes.

Spinach what?

I'm morbidly curious...
