I didn't like Sophia, and I doubt her equivalent in SO4 is going to be hot stuff either (although just from looking at Wikipedia it looks like she has more personality than Sophia, which is a plus). But going into a game intending and apparently hoping to dislike a character is still stupid, and for once it has nothing to do with sexism. Seriously, why would you try to make yourself enjoy the game less?

But just so I don't lose my horrible reputation as an evil fandom feminist, let me toss this in: we already have complaints about the obligatory healer/damsel in distress character, but not about "Edge Maverick"? Seriously?

168. Ugh. Yes. I have seen people offer up perfectly reasonable criticisms of Avatar. And then I have seen people say that Mike and Bryan should be ashamed of themselves for encouraging pedophilia. There is a difference between these two things.

171. Indecipherable secret is indecipherable. But honestly, considering the amount of wank that goes on from the war between angry fans who hate everything and defensive fans who love everything, I don't think people care quite as much about the pairings anymore.

Oh, no, everybody HATES Edge too for being 'emo' later in the game . . . I'd say why but that'd be a spoiler. At any rate, if what happened to him happened to all the whiners, they'd probably go through a psychotic break.

To be honest, so far my favorite character is Lymle (another who everybody bitches about). She's freaking hilarious, though.

She's not a healer OR damsel in distress (at least, not so far as I am. That probably WILL change because, hey, Star Ocean). She's a crazy ranged DPS beast.

Yeah, I kind of expect her to be because, like you said, Star Ocean, but just from the Wikipedia article (which is all I know of the game), she looks more useful than most characters of her type.

109. Of course Edge is a twat, the secret just wasn't about him.

It's not about 'intending' to hate a character, it's about the fact that 99% of the designated love interests in 99% of the JRPGs are variants on the same piss-irritating characters. Sometimes I'm ambivalent, RARELY I like them, so I go in expecting a crappy character. :/
