113. The Shawn/Juliet stuff feels so tacked on, it's awful. I'm a Gus/Juliet shipper for the most part, but I wouldn't mind Lassiter/Juliet.

I'd prefer no canon ships, though, tbh.

161. I'm gonna go ahead and contradict the rest of the commenters by saying...I disagree. I liked Rosario's portrayal well enough for the most part, but she mangled "Out Tonight". And on a purely vocal level, I prefer Daphne; she puts so much character into her singing.

That said, I've never seen/heard a Mimi who actually fit the idea of the character I have in my head, or who I could believe as a nineteen-year-old who can pass for sixteen. And one of the reasons that I do love Daphne so much is because of the 10th anniversary performance, and her sarcastic little eye roll on "I'm nineteen, but I'm old for my age". So cute. ♥

The only song I like better in Daphne's voice is "Without You." The thing that annoys me so much about her voice is that she has no placement at all - that, and her voice doesn't fit the character. To me, as an actor, that's one of the most important parts of casting: Yes, there's some stretching that can be done, but an actor has to fit the part for it to be believable.

Again, I don't entirely know what you mean. Yes, Mimi's nineteen (and, um, no professional production of RENT has ever cast someone who fits -- appearance-wise -- with Mimi's stated age) but she's also a heroin addict who's been through a hell of a lot. I happen to think the gravelly quality of Daphne's voice does fit.

And in terms of acting, Daphne did in fact do an incredible job as Mimi. She had a lot of passion, she was sexy, she was troubled, and she was compelling.

I'm not saying she's the best Mimi ever. For one thing, that's entirely subjective, and for another, there's been some amazing Mimis -- Karmine Alers, for instance, and I'm very fond of Marcy Harriell's interpretation, and Renee Elise Goldberry blew me away tbh, and there's others including some I haven't seen/heard-- but I am going to defend my opinion that Daphne's portrayal was a lot stronger than Rosario's.

No, placement has to do with... well, how you place your voice when you sing. It's largely about which muscles in your face to use, and it's related to tone; good tone is easier when you have good placement. The only way I know how to say it is that if you sing entirely at the back of your throat, with your soft palate lifted, that's lack of placement. I'm sure there's another term for it, I just wouldn't know what it is, because that's what my voice teacher has always called it.

I can't speak to Daphne's acting, as I've never gotten to see her perform the part. As for her voice fitting the part - well, that's also a subjective thing that I think we're going to have to agree to disagree on.

Okay! That mostly makes sense. I'm sure it would make more sense if I'd ever taken more than one voice class. Or at least more than barely passed that one voice class. I am most definitely not a singer.

About Mimi... I'm a 19 year old who could pass for 16... but I'm not an actor, and I definitely can't sing. XP I liked both actors, and they are both so different, vocally. (And like you, neither of them perfectly fits the way I imagine Mimi.)

Exactly! And I like that. I'm glad Rosario didn't go in determined to mimic Daphne, that would've been bad. She did her own thing. That's cool.

The Mimi in my head bears very little in common with any actor cast in a professional production of RENT. Except for clothes. I dig most of what both stage- and movie-version Mimi wear. But aside from that. XD
