116. I know the dialogue is not the most terrific thing that was ever put to paper. Cameron seems to struggle when it's not dealing with familial relationships (see Aliens and the Hicks/Ripley/Newt trifecta, which is the best thing he's written by leaps and bounds). But if you're thinking of getting into screenwriting, then you need to find copies of his scripts and read them through. What comes out of his characters' mouths is sometimes unwieldy, but hot damn can his plots move. Check out The Abyss, First Blood Part II, and Strange Days; they're written with such attention to detail and pacing that a director would barely have to do anything with them. It's a hard thing to make the film make sense on paper, and that's Cameron's strong suit.

127. Jackie Earl Haley! You're gonna want to go ahead and rent a movie called Breaking Away. He's nineteen years old in that one, and stunning as heck. The movie's fantastic as well.

140. I don't get the idea of card-carrying atheism. Isn't the whole idea to shun any sort of belief in a religious or spiritual doctrine? Having to declare yourself as an Atheist seems counter-intuitive, like waking up in the morning and declaring all the things you're not going to do today before you do anything. Makes me confused, anyway. I feel like the fundamentalism should bother me as well, but it doesn't really. It's probably because the clues that point to Earth are eventually borne out...although they do lead to a totally frakked planet. Maybe because we've just gone through an eight-year slog with a president who was in the pocket of religious zealots who pray actively and openly for the end of all things; can't get much worked up after that one. Ah hell, now I've confused myself.

Well, we probably wouldn't go around doing so if most everyone else was religious with a good dose of religious fundies. And mostly it's a part of who I am, it's a key part of how I see the world and interact with it. Besides, I'm actually a member of one of those atheist/secular groups so it's kind of a literal truth.

I know what you mean about Bush making us all used to religious fundies and end of the world people. It's not too confusing. I don't think that's just it, it is probably partially to do with in the end she turns out to be mostly right. You get signs as time goes on and eventually it pans out. In part anyway. And otherwise she's a smart woman and a good woman, smart and a host of other things. Even if she does put the lives of her fleet at risk based on nothing but blind faith.
