I can understand why you found it odd- I'm probably just worrying too much. But for some reason, I don't think that "but it came from the Europeans first!" would seem like a reasonable explanation to a lot of the people who think cultural appropriation IS a big deal.

It's not that I think it's so bad to borrow from other cultures as long as you're respectful and you don't think that makes you an expert about them or one of them, but... a lot of people do. And I've been hearing that point of view a lot more lately, and (while it's not my own point of view) I do have a certain amount of respect, if frustration, for it. That, and I'm scared to be the bad guy.

I just don't see why it matters if you borrow a fashion that was borrowed from another culture in the first place, that's all.
