132. Given that "weeaboo" derives from a wordfilter for "wapanese", a derogatory term for white Japanophiles, I don't think a genuine interest in their language and culture lets you off the hook.

(Of course, I'd be happy to never hear that word again in the first place.)

[identity profile] batty-gal.livejournal.com 2009-03-09 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm almost afraid to ask... but is there a derogatory name for non-whites Japanophiles? Or are we like those nonexistent bisexuals?

(Anonymous) 2009-03-09 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a half-white, half-Hispanic bisexual with an interest in Japan (both its language and its culture).

But you didn't see this comment, because I don't exist. XD

[identity profile] birdboy2000.livejournal.com 2009-03-09 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Not to my knowledge. "Weeaboo" would probably be used, despite the term's origins.

(Anonymous) 2009-03-10 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I'm half Chinese, half white. So I don't count as a weeaboo because I'm already Asian. That's my excuse for it.

[identity profile] the-logical-one.livejournal.com 2009-03-10 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
The Hispanic ones are Ja-panic.

[identity profile] eri-desu.livejournal.com 2009-03-10 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
:O That's a good one!! I've never heard that.

I'm Dominican so my friend calls me Hispanoboo/Dominiboo which doesn't sound as good. If she's going to call me some derogatory thing I'd prefer that it at least sound nice ...wait that's a bad kind of mentality..

Hope you don't mind if I swipe it?

[identity profile] the-logical-one.livejournal.com 2009-03-10 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
Sure, it's from Domino anyway.

(Anonymous) 2009-03-09 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
What do you mean by "a wordfilter"? I've never understood the etymology of this word.

[identity profile] birdboy2000.livejournal.com 2009-03-09 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
4chan once put up a filter which changed every instance of the word "wapanese" posted there to the word "weeaboo", a nonsense term from a Perry Bible Fellowship comic.

[identity profile] cutesiness.livejournal.com 2009-03-10 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, what? (No srsly. I didn't get what you were saying. Poor wording?)

[identity profile] birdboy2000.livejournal.com 2009-03-10 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
Let me try again...

Given that the word "weeaboo" originates from 4chan filtering "wapanese" (a derogatory term for a white japanophile akin to "wigger") a genuine interest in their society and culture doesn't make you not a weeaboo - if anything, it makes you an extreme one.

(Of course, I hate that word. And in practice, it means "any anime fan/japanophile I don't like.")

[identity profile] cutesiness.livejournal.com 2009-03-10 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think I agree with your definition, but if anything, I think it's a good thing for anyone to be genuinely interested in a different culture. In fact, it's a luxury to even be able to enjoy another culture, even more if they are able to learn the language, travel to their country of interest, etc. People take the fact that they have this access to other cultures for granted. It's a shame that they target others who actually take advantage of it under a gross generalization. They have the privilege of being open-minded, yet they're not.

[identity profile] birdboy2000.livejournal.com 2009-03-10 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
I completely agree. (And this might surprise you, in which case my earlier posts will come across all wrong.)

[identity profile] cutesiness.livejournal.com 2009-03-10 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
Not at all. ^o^ I kinda thought you were just giving out the technical definition of the term, but as always context is everything. It's really sad that an interest in Japan has such a negative connotation in the internet.
