117. Ew, Philippa Gregory.

121. ...People actually do that? And folks think [livejournal.com profile] rahmbamarama is weird.

122. Love Nick, but Simon never feels threatened by anything. HE WILL FUCKING END YOU OKAY.

124. OH MY GOD MARRY ME. THIS IS ONE OF MY BIGGEST PET PEEVES AND I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE OMG. I hate how people think the only way to make a female character compelling is to cast her in the modern-day feminist mold, defying her elders and running around in boys' clothing and shit and doing things that would've gotten her beaten or worse in her time. The absolute worst is when the protagonist has "special powers," super healing capabilities or the ability to read people or some shit. WHY IS IT SO FUCKING HARD TO WRITE ABOUT REALISTIC WOMEN??? Also, good to know that I shouldn't bother reading Mistress of the Art of Death. XD

Re: 117 I found her earlier books much better than her Tudor dross, to be honest.

Sounds like you dislike the historical fantasy genre. Maybe you should avoid it instead of complaining about its existence.

No, historical fantasy is fine. But there are more books than you might think that are billed as straight historical fiction, but the author wants to make the heroine "special" somehow, as the OP mentioned. So she winds up having some kind of special non-magical power, like being the only one in the whole kingdom that knows of the specific herb that can cure the king, or being the only one who is intuitive enough to suspect the villain of being evil from the very beginning, or being raised as a peasant and later finding out that she's really the daughter of some prince or something.

I wouldn't classify those books as historical fantasy, just historical fiction wherein the author contrives fantastical plot devices to make the heroine super-special.
