As someone who reads a ton of gen fic and whose biggest bookmarked tag on Ao3 is hurt/comfort, that isn't my experience. Is there more h/c fic in romance stories? Yes, but that is because there is just more romance stories overall. Maybe yall are in extremely ship heavy fandoms (I have experience in large and small fandoms).

Okay, Genfic means exactly the kind of fic that could be an episode of the show in question. Unless it is a show set in a psychological trauma facility, then h/c is unlikely to be gen. I feel there is a definition misunderstanding here.

...that has never been my understanding of "genfic". Genfic is fanfiction with no romance or sex

And there are many, many fandoms that would allow for hurt/comfort as if it were "an episode of the show in question" if that is your definition of Genfic.

You have a baked in misunderstanding then. I can see where you came by it, because a lot of older episodic shows and fandom just didn't have much in the way of romance in them to start with, so you probably misinterpreted regular show story which ordinarily didn't have romance just as a matter of course, as just being no romance in general. If a show is romance heavy then genfic from that show would involve shipping, and, yes, if the show is about woeful people feeling sorry for themselves and someone nursing them, then h/c would also be genfic for that show. Gen means "generic" fic.

"Gen" may mean "generic fic" in some tiny fandom somewhere you belong to. But for the general fandom public, it does not. Genfic means fic with no romance or sex. You can have genfic with hurt/comfort in literally ANY fandom. I could write some hurt/comfort gen, highscool AU fic about the show Taskmaster.

It's so funny when people are so confidently and condescendingly wrong about things lmao

Uh, the "baked in misunderstanding" here is all yours.

Gen fic is just fic that doesn't focus on shipping, sex or romance. It's nothing to do with whether it could be part of canon.

Genfic means no romance and no sex, at least not as the main focus of the fic, and that is all it means.

No, that's an episode or episodic fic. Gen COULD be like an episode from the source material, but could also be a character study or delving into a friendship possibility not shown in the source, or a college AU. Gen = no added romantic shipping.

DA

Yeah, I write a lot of gen fic and hurt/comfort is a common aspect of a lot of my fics. I've never tagged anything "whump", 'cause my fics don't tend to fall into that particular category (I tend to focus more on emotions instead of physical injury/pain), but the hurt/comfort aspect is definitely there.
