I have no clue about RWBY but it seems pretty obvious to me that someone with a very obviously Chinese name is probably not white. White-passing, sure, maybe, but that's a different thing.

So yeah, based on no knowledge other than this secret, I agree with you OP, that was hella dumb.

I think there is some legitimacy to it as far as mukokuseki is a concept meant (in the West) to be applied mostly to anime made by and for Japanese people, who see default features are Japanese. But RWBY is not an Asian show and a lot of its primary audience is white. It's less of a plausibility with Yang to say well you should just know that she's not white because her face isn't inherently white! Target audience matters here.

That's still a dumb reason to say she's actually white and then complain about it, because she's not. But that wasn't made as obvious as it would be if the show were an anime.

I don't think Mukokuseki applies to American animations. Chinese characters created by Americans usually have dark hair, so it's not exactly far-fetched to think this very blonde girl is white.

As for her name, maybe some people thought it was fantasy name, not Chinese.

Man, the amount of times I've seen this wank unfold in anime fandoms. And it routinely gets racist af too.

Even more so when they aren't mukokuseki and you still get some weirdo going "I fixed it!" and drawing a character like Homura Akemi black and complaining that a show with all Asians set in Japan with Asian names is full of white people.

I feel like it has been pretty marked for a long time that the non-TV versions of Who tell more interesting, creative, wacky stories than the televised version. Maybe that's just a function of the pragmatic realities of television and the BBC versus the relative creative freedom of secondary media that no one cares about, though.

(also, side note, I feel like we've done plenty of Mary Shelley stories and I would absolutely love a Mary Wollstonecraft story)

There are a LOT of successful pro writers who still write fanfic as a hobby. I know the narrative is "pro writer gets their start in fanfic as training wheels for real writing" which is true for many people.

But there are a quite a few pro writers, including some pretty big names, who still write fanfic for fun. They don't have to stop, and why would they want to if they're still enjoying it?

Should rewriting count towards a word count?

I'm trying to set myself some 2022 writing goals right now and I've hit a brick wall. I've hand written some rough first drafts of fics this year and plan to rewrite them, polish and post them next year. But I don't know whether rewriting should count towards my word count goal for 2022.

Technically I've already written the stories but they will undoubtedly be undergoing major editing and rewriting as I err more towards the pantser end of the spectrum. So should I count the rewrites in my word count goal? Should I only count new words written? Should I half it, so 1000 words of a rewrite counts as 500 words towards my goal?

Any wisdom, F!S?
