Don't sweat it, OP.
I do find people are completely hypocritical when it comes to RPF.
It's all 'live and let live', ship all times of contraversial stuff (shipping a child with an adult 'fine! Stop judging!') but ship two RL adults with each other it's all 'you sicko!'
For me, I was into a particular couple from a tv series, even looking up fan blogs where they were putting together 'clues' from their interactions. (I also wrote a piece putting together the pieces, with no intent to ever post before deleting it from my computer). I was half convinced it was true! For me it was all fun. I didn't tell anyone else about my fascination, nor did I care either way.

I'm pretty sure it's the SPN fandom y'all RPS/RPF folks have to thank for the kneejerk opposition your particular iteration of fandom gets. I will never forget some of the truly astounding shit that went down with the SPN RPS-ers, I think it was kinda seared into the collective consciousness of a lot of people back then

Well, bud, I didn't like it when people made up weird sex-stories about me, so I don't make up weird sex-stories about other people. It's that simple.

I’ve never really encountered this hypocrisy before. In my experience, it’s not the people who are accepting of other people’s ships and kinks without judgment who are the ones who call RPF writers sickos. It’s generally just been anti-types, or people who haven’t stated their beliefs on potentially problematic ships one way or another. If you’re right though, the hypocrisy is indeed stupid, of course.

I’ve got nothing against RPF shippers, even though I’m not a fan of RPF, personally.

Maybe it has something to do with the fact, that it's real people, who are subjected to constant sexualization, sometimes against their clearly expressed will. Many RPF shippers don't understand boundaries, and will proudly tag the content creator's main twitter account on their NFSW fanart of that content creator, or DM them on social media websites asking about their opinion on a fanwork, etc. It's even more awkward if your underage family members are in the fandom, and people are DMing and tagging them asking for an opinion about NSFW fanworks, or questioning them about the details of your offscreen interactions with the person you're shipped with. And don't get me started on the sad fate of people who are even suspected of dating one half of a popular ship. Shippers are not above doxing and sending death threats to whoever they see as threatening their ship.

But this kind of attitude is HIGHLY PROBLEMATIC regardless of shipping.

I'm sorry but you can't disassociate this behavior from shipping. Few content creators are opposed to being tagged on fanworks which doesn't depict them as having sex with their friends and family members. The romantic nature of the fanworks is the core of the issue.

I suppose it's more usual than fanworks depicting them murdering their friends or whatever. I guess most content creators would be offput by this, too.

These type of fanworks aren't common, but there actually have been talks about the morality of gore and horror art featuring real people. This topic isn't even new - the Beating Up Anita Sarkesian game at the peak of gamergate has also sparked some debates.
