No, RPF is actually rare. I went to AO3 and did a search both with excluding RPF and not excluding it. There are 8,532,511 fics there.

If you run a search EXCLUDING RPF, you get 7,998,068

Subtract the former from the latter and you get 534,443

RPF is only a little more half a million fics out of more than 8 million.

I was suspicious of this, because I know ppl don't tag correctly. I just searched for RPF like I was looking for it. An RPF all fandoms search will give you ... the same: 534,442 RPF fics.

Video blogging RPF, the fandom you seem obsessed with, only has 168,329 fics as of now, unless I'm not searching by the right tag. That is...not a major factor on an archive with 8 million fics.

I'm honestly surprised by how low that number is! I thought it would be bigger for its annoying social-media-presence. I definitely thought RPF was much less popular than FPF by a mile, but I didn't even realize it was less popular by a ten-hour drive. You're so much wronger about that than I thought you were!

so I'll play Snopes

RPF is probably the largest category of fanworks on nearly every platform hosting fanworks.

Confirmed FALSE

Let me play snopes now:

Search for Louis Tomlinson: 49845
Search for Louis Tomlinson with RPF filtered out: 48060

So only 1785 out of 49845 fanworks about a real life person, who repeatedly stated that RPF makes him uncomfortable, is tagged as RPF. That's 3.58% of the total RPF fanworks about one person alone. Granted, it's better for video blogging RPF, because it exists as its own category, but a lot of fics about actors and bands are tagged with just the actor and band's name, with no RPF tag anywhere on the fic.

You've been fired from snopes.

But let's go further! I checked the top viewed fics on AO3 by number of hits. 3 out of top 6 was Video Blogging RPF fics. Dream SMP RPF specifically, despite existing for only a year. It beats fanfics even from major fandoms that existed for decades, such as Harry Potter, or Marvel multiverse.

Tell me again how totally unpopular RPF is in fandom today.

Ha ha wow, I totally screwed the pooch on that one (tw bestiality in figure of speech). Mea culpa! that's what I get for trying to math at that hour.

However according to someone who actually does stats well, the top 10 fandoms on AO3 in number of fanworks only has ONE RPF fandom in it (BTS, at #7). The other 9 are all fictional: https://archiveofourown.org/works/29249172. Granted this is almost a year old, but I don't think it's changed that dramatically.

It does go to show how little RPF is on my radar. I just don't care about it at all so I haven't paid much attention.

Considering that DSMP's rise in popularity happened over this year, I think the stats for this year will be different. You don't get 3 out of 6 most viewed fics of all times as a small fandom.

Also, according to the stats in your link, "K-POP" and "Real Person Fiction" are the 3rd and 4th most popular fandom tags. I suppose the most popular pairings and top fandoms/pairings statistics don't properly reflect that, because RPF isn't tied to any one specific fandom, but can be found across nearly all fandoms. In other words: an RPF fic of Tom Hiddlestone/Chris Hemsworth will likely still be tagged as "Marvel" fandom and therefore contribute to the Marvel fandom numbers, and might not even be tagged as "RPF".
