That does sound annoying OP.

*goes back to shipping Eponine and Erik from Phantom*

lmao, my initial reaction was to say eponine deserves better but then I thought, he's got hella money and she could probably throw anything he tried to do to her back in his face and threaten to beat him up, so he'd probably have to be nice to her. I could see it working out

I think modern AU Les Mis fic is generally very good. So on the whole, I'm happy that it exists. I get that it's frustrating when people in the fandom like different shit and have a different read on what fic should be like, but, well, what's one to do?

(Anonymous) 2021-12-09 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
there's probably a very easily defined tipping point where the only thing the AU has in common with the canon is the names of the characters, and that's definitely the point at which an author should say fuck it, change the names, and publish original fic. it's not like books can't be "based on" or "inspired by" classics so that if someone goes hmm these characters' motivations smell a little like class struggles in France circa the revolution, it doesn't look or feel like anything resembling plagiarism of a book (or movie whatever).

what's one to do? be honest with yourselves. just fucking admit that it's not canon and you like it that way, while admitting that other people want more canon than this and that's also okay. yall don't like the same things in your fic as each other and don't try to rec something to a person who doesn't like the same thing as you.

I don't think it's easily defined at all as a general rule. It is often extremely difficult to define the tipping point. Maybe not so much in this specific instance, but, in general.

Second, I don't think that publishing modern AU fic as original fic would actually solve anyone's problems here. It's not as though the existing fandom would suddenly disappear just because a popular fic got taken down and repubbed as original fic. Those versions of the characters are still gonna be out there and people are still going to like them. And they are still based on the original canon even if it is a departure.

I agree that everyone should just be chill and accept that people have different tastes and it's OK to want more or less canon in your fic. I'm not really sure if that's the line that OP is taking in the actual secret though. Like OP does not seem to have the attitude that it's OK for people to want less canon in their fic. Maybe I'm interpreting it incorrectly, I don't know, but what they want seems to be for everyone who wants less canon in their fic to go away completely.

And it's not like it's the first time in fandom that there's been very different versions of characters to the extent that a lot of people think the fanon interpretation is an AU. I get why it's annoying when you're not into that interpretation, it can definitely be frustrating. But it's also very much a normal thing that happens in fandom.

mmm I'm in Les Mis fandom and if you think that these folks confine it to fic, or, half the time, appear aware that there even is a musical or a book, you and I must be having very different experiences

(Anonymous) 2021-12-09 11:42 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah it's the ur fandom I think of for the phenomenon of "If you replace the characters' names in this AU I would not know this was supposed to be fanfic" and it's like every fic.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-09 12:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I was going to say, forget the book, they act like the musical doesn't matter. I get the impression it's like "Jean Valjean who? Oh, eww, the old guy?"

(Anonymous) 2021-12-09 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Where is this fic?

(Anonymous) 2021-12-09 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
I'm assuming this is "World Ain't Ready," which I think is on AO3

(Anonymous) 2021-12-09 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Then write your own if you haven't and stop whining.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-09 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
This comment makes no sense my dude. Write their own rival AU fic?

Yeah, this canon replacement (it happens with reboots and such too) and I think it's very annoying, and the best thing anyone can do is like...be clear about their influences and what spaces are for what spaces. I think you might be able to enforce that. You're not going to be able to separate tags and such tho without nuclear drama, I mean.....sorry.

I remember trying to read Les Mis docs back when the movie came out but found out quickly that all the stories are about some mutually agreed fanon versions of Les Amis and gave up.
