I feel so poor rn

(Anonymous) 2021-12-09 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
I just paid half my property taxes, and even though it's less than a month's rent around here, it's still almost a month's pay for me.

Where I live my salary is peanuts, but I can't afford to move.

I hope nothing (else, sigh, a lot of expensive shit went down for me recently) goes wrong for awhile.

How did your tooth end up working out?

AYRT--about $450 up front for the temp crown, just got the permanent, they're waiting to hear back from my insurance about how much more I owe. Still waiting on an amended water bill, too.

Hey anon, I'm not sure where you live, but if you're in the USA, you may have Federal/State programs to help you out with some of the finances, like the water bill, especially if you can show your arrears were due to COVID (as some programs are COVID specific).

I've been filling out some forms for help re: rent/utilities arrears for someone, and I just remembered this and thought maybe it could be helpful for you. Again, some states/cities may not have the funding for this kind of help, but it's worth a shot. Are you allowed to pay on a payment plan for the tooth situation?

I know it's really...I don't want to say shameful, but I've always felt bad about admitting when I needed help with finances, and the times that's limited me from doing things and put a burden/stress. So I hope you can find some help and things get better.

And if anyone makes you feel bad about your finances, just know it's BS. We all need help at some point or another.

AYRT--thanks, but I really do feel poorer than I actually am; I have a full time benefitted job that pays $6 over state (not bad) minimum wage, my only dependents are my pets, and while I'm not rolling in dough I still have money in my checking account right now; not tons, but I'm not checking under the couch cushions for grocery money.

I'm expecting a fairly low water bill since the massive $820 charge was caused by a leaky gasket in my meter box, and turned out to be the city's problem. But apparently the water department is chronically understaffed, so it will take them awhile to update my bill.

And so far as covid goes, I haven't been directly affected (knock wood) but the city is not shutting off water for non payment right now, so even if it takes them awhile with the holidays and covid and staff shortages to send me an updated bill, I should be okay.

I spent so long at an hourly job with middling pay and no health insurance that I still panic at large or emergency expenses even though I'm no longer living hand to mouth. I think I'm technically lower middle class, yay!
