103 OP

That is not the point I was trying to make. I am very happy to have new people enter any fandom in which I participate. However, I do not like when someone comes in with the strict purpose of becoming a BNF since the fandom is small, and they pretend that they know everything there is to know about the fandom itself, not just the show. This has occurred in the past with several fandoms I have participated in, but this is the first in which I have seen the fandom respond positively to it.

In the example posited previously, it would be the equivalent of a new Star Trek fan entering the extensive Star Trek fandom and attempting to pretend they are someone important and that their word is gospel. They would be laughed out of the Star Trek fandom or utterly ignored. That is not the case with the Metalocalypse fandom. That was my point.

Anyone who takes Metalocalypse, the show or the fandom, so seriously makes me laugh! :D

Why?

Taking something seriously is a product of loving it. And that's a good thing. Even if the source material is absurd, there's nothing wrong with wanting to flesh it out and build with your imagination.

Isn't that the point?

Thank you. I will attempt to make myself clearer in the future should I have the need to create another secret.

Thank you for not immediately jumping all over everyone who disagreed with you, and having a reasonable, well-written defense. Most people never seem to manage that and it's thoroughly silly.

Maybe I'm just not seeing the fandom politics here, since I'm not in yours. But by your description, a fandom should never grow or change from what it begins as. New people should join it, but immediately conform to old conventions and agree with the hive mind mentality.

If your fandom is openly accepting holier-than-thou elitists marching in and attempting to take over? That's their fault for being so easily swayed. But is this change an entirely bad thing? Usually if a BNF-wannabe is a douchebag, they'll end up being exposed for it eventually, fall out, and move on to ravage yet another fandom. Yours will survive. Maybe you should talk to the person in question about their attitude. They may not even realize they're coming across this way.

And if it's so easy to become a BNF? What does the title even mean anyway, you know? Small fandoms get excited when new blood shows up. They'll flock and coo and praise the newbie for a month and then get bored. They'll either accept the new recruit and chill out, or backstab and berate them into leaving. As seems the trend.

Evolution in any fandom is logical and inevitable, and conforming to a "hive mind mentality" in this fandom is impossible. No such thing exists.

This specific fandom skews somewhat younger, and it is very enthusiastic, which is a wonderful quality that unfortunately leads it to be more susceptible to this type of behaviour. These people executing this behaviour, however, are well aware of their actions and have been privately called on it by some individuals who are unwilling to make public statements on it for the sake of not causing wank. This was as public as I was willing to go.

BNF's were formerly people of respect. This has sadly become more of stigma than an honour now. Some people want it regardless of the ugliness often attached to it. Publicity is publicity.

In any fandom, if someone comes in trying to be a BNF just for the attention gets noticed quick and shuffled off to the side. And usually laughed at when they try to throw themselves around.

It has happened in a lot of fandoms. Yeah, they can attract a lot of newbies in any group, but even they give up when the 'BNF' proves to be a twit.

Most of the Trek BNFs I've known, and the true BNFs, didn't want to be that to start with. They would try to blow it off and eventually sigh, give up and become the 'go to' people for the fandom. But for the most part, they were just fellow fen who loved the show.
