The Doctor's knowledge is what she needed to save the universe. The point there was that she had the knowledge and awareness of the universe of a Time Lord, combined with her own mind and imagination that let her be better than the Doctor.

Yup. It's the triangulation that all companions have (to a certain extent) taken to its most extreme conclusion.

THIS. she even says it when they ask her how she knew how to do it.

...except she couldn't have done it without a Time Lord brain. Even WITH the Time Lord brain, she could only handle the knowledge for a short period of time. Not that there's anything wrong with that in and of itself--she's only human. Thing is, though, that it's something any human could have done.

She isn't special, she's just lucky. She did nothing that was of her own merit to GET that knowledge. She was just in the right place at the right time.

Here's what Donna did that helped anybody: she knew about bees, and she decided that manhunting was more important than a career. That's IT.

Wow, you totally didn't watch the series at all. Watch it again, pay attention this time. Maybe it'll get through your thick skull the second time around.

sorry, just very passionate about donna.

i think the person below me said it best.

She also
-kept the Doctor from drowning underneath the Thames
-singlehandedly mounted an investigation of a shady business
-tried to save people in Pompeii
-investigated ATMOS on her own and noticed a problem with the workers
-walked out onto a ship full of aliens who would've killed her in a heartbeat, when she could've chosen to cower in a corner and do nothing
-helped the Doctor bond with his daughter
-figured out the numbers in the colony
-tried to make Agatha Christie and Miss Evangelista feel better about themselves
-comforted the Doctor after he nearly got killed in "Midnight"
-went out and tried to find a job in the alternate universe, even though the world was falling apart and she could've sunk into a lethargic depression like her mum did
-jumped in front of a truck to save the world, without even knowing the Doctor
-was generally there for the Doctor, and acted as a friend to him

And in the books, there's more stuff she did, even when they were separated for most of the novels.

I think the fact that she stood up to him showed that she DID have an identity--her own moral code, and convictions that she wasn't shy about sharing. He could've booted her off the TARDIS at any second, and tussling with him that early in their journey (as she did in Pompeii) might very well have caused him to do so.

I hated JE, thought the whole thing was stupid and handwavey, so I agree with you there. However, while Donna's strength may not be intellectual, she makes up for it with bravery and emotional insight. She demonstrated a willingness to learn from her experiences. And if she struggled with her life before the Doctor--well, as others have said, there are plenty of people who don't see their own potential and need to be challenged for it to come out. It was made clear that her mother's attitude was largely responsible for dragging her down.

And as someone else has stated, the show is about the companions and how the Doctor has changed their lives. Rose certainly didn't have much of a life before the Doctor--and if anything, her identity started to become subsumed the more time they spent together.

And this wound up being way more TL;DR than I'd planned.
