Prolific Fic

(Anonymous) 2021-12-19 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
What are some of the most prolific fics in your fandom? Did you read them and were they deserving of the hype? Was it one of yours? Was there a lesser known one that you felt executed a similar plot better?/was altogether a better story?

Feel free to provide description or name of the fic.

Brought to you by the fact that the fic I'm currently loving and realizing that it appears in my Google search as a suggestion when I start typing in the name of the fic lol

If the authors are super prolific with drabbles, then I read zero of them. They pollute the feed. On the other hand if an author has only one of two fic to their name then it is also a bad sign, and I skip those too. There is a balance to be had. An author has to have written enough to demonstrate they know their craft, but not so much as it has become spam.

I suppose if an author wrote genuine, exactly a hundred words, drabbles instead of short stream of consciousness fics that masquerade as drabbles, then I'd be minded to give them a shot.

What if it's someone's alternate account?

What if it isn't?

Well, I guess you'll never know because you'll never read their stuff.

And that is their loss, not mine.

How else do you learn good technique?

Sure sure, you’re “practicing technique”.

(Lol, fair enough, honestly.)

There are quite a few excellent writers who have only written one or two for some fandoms and they're fandom classics every time. Resonant on AO3 immediately springs to mind.

So too much fanfic, is bad, but too little fanfic... is also bad? You do you man, but I'll just click through on fic to see if I jive with the prose and if not I'll only have wasted a few moments of my time.

The biggest Sauron/Melkor fic is called This Game We Play. And no, I don't think it deserves the hype. I mean, the author writes well (in spite of an obsession with a few words she repeats a lot). I like some of her other stuff. But while her Melkor is at least relatively in-character, her Sauron is not, at least in my opinion.

There are a lot of different interpretations of the characters and their relationship. This is very often people's first introduction to the ship. It was mine, and for a while I loved it. But as started to get a more solid sense of Sauron's character, I stopped enjoying it.

Also, yes, she writes a lot of rape, but even when she writes consensual things, she can't seem to imagine men wanting to be penetrated and always rights it as a character tolerating it but not really wanting it.

What do you mean by the fic being prolific? Popular? Frequently recommended?

Lmao you caught me; OP needs a dictionary

(Anonymous) 2021-12-20 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
My mind kept saying prolific when in fact what I meant was highly popular/most recommended or well known. Trophied stories in whatever fandom you're in.

Sorry!

Revelations by the anon known as Ride To Church Anon is arguably the most adored and revered Starker fic, and holy shit it is so. damn. good.

In the early years of BBC Sherlock fandom, The Paradox Series by Wordstrings was huge, and also extremely excellent.

In The X-Files fandom, Parabiosis by Penumbra was idolized and adored by a large chunk of the fandom (myself included). The Iolokus Series by MustangSally and RivkaT was also incredibly fandom famous, and deliciously controversial in its day.
