109: My biggest issue with Dollhouse is: So, they know Echo's being targeted, but they're still sending her out on high-risk missions? Are they stupid, or do they just not care about her safety?
And the thing is, they could have gotten around this by focusing on more than just Echo (like, a whole episode or two featuring other Actives, making this almost an anthology show), so they could take Echo off active duty for awhile without it being a big deal. In fact, I think the show would be better with that format, period. Watching a guy get pimped out now and again would be nice...

Seriously. The show would be a lot better if we saw more of the male actives and what they get up to -- and who their handlers are. The only one we've seen gets to be an informant -- I wonder if the guys have to actually screw anyone, heh.

Yeah, it kinda does. I used the word "pimp" quite intentionally, since sex is clearly part of many missions (maybe not specifically, but it clearly ends up happening), so the company is pretty much doing that to their "Actives". So watching a guy get treated like a sex object for a change would be nice...

A-fucking men.

But the sex-after-each mission could just be FOX!s influence...or it could be some terrible coincidence.

It goes beyond just the pimping of the actives, though. Look at who's in which roles. Yes, there's one woman who's a higher up, playing Dollhouse madam. Goody. But who's the crusading FBI agent? A man. What gender is the person who holds the real power over them, the wiping and creating of identities? Male. What gender are all the handlers we've seen? Male. Who are the clients? Men, and twice now it's been men wanting to protect/save women(and based on the previews for tonight's ep that I haven't seen, it might be three times now). Who's the only other woman so far? A doctor, which is great and all, but she's the most passive character who isn't an active. Oh, wait, I almost forgot the neighbor woman who's got the hots for the FBI man...and that would seem to be her only purpose.

I'm not saying there shouldn't be powerful male characters, or that to have men protecting women or whatever is wrong. Just that they shouldn't have such a stranglehold on it. If you're a so-called feminist and you're going to have a show where women are literally being prostituted to strange men for money, you need to glorify it just a little less.

Sounds more like women have all the fun, while men just do the grunt work.

And I'm still not sure if 'prostituting women out to strange men' is the true intentional purpose of the show or just a knee-jerk reaction by some of the viewers.

Late but I kinda thought all that was once again part of the point though??

I feel really stupid when I read all these things like where there are so many male characters in charge and how the women are treated awful but I thought that was all related and part of the point? They be the bad guys, and they are using these women, and it's men. I think it's leading to a huge feminist point about her gaining power over them eventually, as she gradually remembers things, kinda symbolising how time is evolving just like this. Men used to be in charge.

That's been my interpretation as I watched it, but then I've seen these snapshots of fandom (I'm not in the DollHouse fandom) and secrets where people think it's anti-femisit and comments like this, and how it's glorifying bad treatment of women, and I feel crazy thinking of the opposite- well not the opposite, because I agree that it's been happening, but I assumed all along that was the point being made. I worry I must be looking at this in a really weird way.....

THIS! So far everyone's really pretty forgetable, which is extra annoying since usually he's good at character-building. The dialogues need work, too. I'd like some of that witty Whedon banter that we used to get.

I'm giving it one more episode to impress me, but right now I just keep thinking that the idea might have worked better as a movie than as a series.

That, and for someone who calls himself a feminist, this show has some major gender role stereotyping issues.
