But seriously. The first few episodes of Buffy? With those sound effects? And the cheesy valley girl speak?
It's growing pains. Nothing is perfect. When I watch/read something of Joss's, usually for the first bit I'm wincing, but I hold out because I know he's just laying the groundwork and then he's going to knock my socks off.
I firmly believe Dollhouse will only get better and more complex and textured as the show goes on. If Fox doesn't prematurely cancel it, of course.

Laying groundwork is fine and good and obviously he can't expose all of it at once if he's going to have a viable series, but if all we're going to get for the first four episodes is essentially women pimped out to men for their "talents" (which aren't even the women's talents since they have to be given to the women)then I'm sorry, but I get a bit restless waiting for the rest of the story to show up and give me a reason to enjoy watching people being wiped of their memories so they can be prostituted to rich strangers.
Issues with groundwork and the glorification of forced prostitution aside(since I agree that Joss is probably going somewhere more complex with that eventually), the true problem is that so far it's had none of the Joss stuff that make his shows good. The characterization falls flat, most of the roles are bland (Topher is literally the only character I'm curious to find out more about), and where is the humor and the wit? Firefly was a little difficult to get into at first (which is why I haven't given up on Dollhouse yet, despite my whinging), but even the first episode made me laugh and enjoy the characters.
I want the show to be good, and like I said, I haven't given up on it. But right now it's falling way, way short. Honestly still better than a lot of what's out there, but way short of Joss's usual awesomeness. Some things are probably at least partially Fox's fault, but I doubt the lack of clever writing is.
