FWIW, OP, I agree. I think what he says to Franziska is appalling, and I'm uncomfortable with the way he is with Mia - especially when you look at it together with the kind of paternalistic, "chivalrous" attitude that comes through when he talks to Phoenix about how Phoenix should have "saved" Mia somehow, and he blames him for not having done so. I imagine that this doesn't come across often in fandom a) because he most often appears with Mia, and it's difficult to imagine Mia ever putting up with that kind of crap, so it's easy to assume that he changed when he was with her, and b) there's an awful lot that's both interesting and touching about Godot's story, and that's more apparent and foregrounded than his woman issues. It'd be good to see more Godot-centric stuff in the fandom that deals with how he's both sympathetic and unsympathetic, actually.

What you say does make a lot of sense; I had never really thought of point A that way before. And I'm not saying he's a totally unsympathetic character, just that that one flaw is a bit of a deal-breaker for me personally. I do feel like that aspect of his character gets glossed over a lot in fandom -- especially when he's with Mia, actually, as I would imagine that the older, more self-confident Mia would clash with him over it a few times before he learned anything, you know?

No, I hear you, defintely :) I think it's the "glossing over" of it that's the key, for me - there's been a lot of people saying yes but he has an awful lot of other flaws and he was never meant to be vindicated or put on a pedestal, which is absolutely true, but when you don't really see his sexism specifically mentioned by fandom all that often it starts to grate a little.

pyrasaur's comment, though, is a great example of people who do think about it and take it seriously and still find him sympathetic, and maybe there's more of that that I'm not seeing, idk.

The deal-breaker thing's interesting to me, b/c casual misogyny is one for me, too, and yet I like characters who have done objectively far, far worse things...I wonder if it's because of a kind of real world leak-over? If you have, say, a character who's a murderer, there's no widespread debates that murder is A Bad Thing, and it's not going to be tying into any prevalent social messages that Murder is A-OK, so you don't really have to point and say, you know this guy's a piece of shit, right? Right. You can just take him as a character and explore him. That's not necessarily true of misogyny and chauvinist characters. Idk, just thoughts, anyway.
