I know all the characters but the third, and that's probably going to have a lot to do with what the final translation is. Anyone know it?

First character's common translation is self, second character's translation is knowledge, and last character really depends on what the third is to give an accurate translation.

According to Google Translator, the whole word means "self-knowledge; knowledge of one's limitations", but OP seems to imply it's *~deeper~* than that.

Yeah, it's pretty much "knowledge of one's limitations," as far as I know. Specifically, knowing where your faults lie. If someone with an in-depth knowledge of Daoism wants to give the history of the phrase, please come enlighten us.

The third character is a way of marking possessive. "Of" is the closest English equivalent I can think of -- it creates a modifier out of the first two characters. I would translate the phrase as "self-awareness" myself but I have no idea what the OP's intent is.
