That's not how I interpret it. I think the writer is saying that s/he thinks beautiful people on the inside deserve to be beautiful on the outside and perhaps even vice-versa, and so when she sees a picture of someone she knows to be beautiful on the outside, it doesn't seem to fit or be fair.

It might be naive or idealistic but I don't think the person is being unintentionally (or intentionally, for that matter) mean.

But beauty is subjective so when you say someone is ugly it's still quite negative. It ends up becoming mean no matter what your original intentions were.

Ah, yes I see what you mean. But, this is fandom secrets so the authors are usually overly blunt and/or shocking.

That's very true.

It's still pretty damn patronizing, though. Saying 'you deserve better' is akin to pity and I don't think anyone would want their friends to look at them and think "damn, your life must SUCK because of how ugly you are, when really you're sort of a nifty person!"

I admit I am probably reading into the writer's comments and perhaps mistakenly defending them, but you are also reading into the writer's secret. The writer did not say anything of the sort that their "ugly" friends have an unfortunate life.

I would argue that it's implied - the only way their ugliness would be deemed 'unfair' is if it disadvantaged them - but I can see how the secret reads a whole bunch of ways.
