113) (Here be T&T spoilers)

113) Well, see, I think there are very good thematic reasons for Diegodot making sexist douchebag comments.

In 3-4, Diego put the emphasis on Mia, saying she was the star today. He could have just been like, "LOL I sure am" when Mia referred to him as the star of Grossberg and Co., though. If he actually believed the pretty kitten was inferior, wouldn't Diego just take the case himself instead of walking Mia through it? He clearly trusts that she'll figure out his cryptic hints. He knows she's capable. And doesn't patronizing Mia do an excellent job of getting her fired up and determined to win? I tend to think that Diego was hamming up his chauvinism with Mia's best interest in mind, regardless of how much he actually believed it.

Post-coma is another story. I say that Godot must have severe mental issues from the poison's neurological damage and/or the grief of his whole life falling down around his ears, but even aside from that. The core PW story is of the Feys. The theme is women in power. Diego got involved with the Fey succession battle, fell for a Fey, was robbed of his life by a Fey, and now is fighting on a Fey's behalf because he can't get over his love for her. His macho attitude is ironic, compared to the fact that Diego's role is defined by strong women. That jackass 3-5 comment to Franziska was the lashing out of a very broken man who couldn't stop screwing up. In that context, I don't see how Godot can be taken as enough of a threat to cause anyone offense. He's clearly the pathetic one.

By the end of the game, Diegodot has taken on strong women (and a strong woman's protegé) and gotten his ass kicked in various ways. Even if you interpret Diego's character completely differently than I do, we can agree that he gets his comeuppance, right? No one outright states that he's a sexist jerk, but then again, no one calls Godot a cool guy except Godot himself. Even if he didn't initially respect Mia as an equal, he speaks respectfully to her in 3-5 as "madame attorney" and doesn't use the term "kitten" at all. And just look at how he phrases his confession. He mentions "Mia and I". She's first. She trumps him in the end, and he knows it.

I mean, just sayin'. That's why I love Diego as a character and forgive the stupid stuff he sometimes says.

113 OP

You make some very interesting and articulate points, most of which I had never considered. Thank you for that. I'm afraid (it being Friday night) I don't have the brainpower to write up a similarly in-depth response -- sorry! -- but I do appreciate your taking the time to explain all that.

I'd also like to say (though I feel a bit repetitive about it at this point) that it was never my intention to say no one ought to like him, only that I felt like I was the only one who didn't and I found it frustrating, and also that I didn't feel like I could mention that I disliked him or why because I'd get flamed or accused of taking things too seriously. I know I worded the secret in a fairly inflammatory manner; I didn't put a lot of thought into it, I admit. Such is the fandomsecrets way, I suppose. At any rate, I'm sorry for that.

I don't think there are many people that would deny that Godot is sexist, even among his fans. The issue is mainly if that is enough to completely turn you off the character, or if his other traits are strong enough to make you overlook his more negative ones.

I mean, possibly the fandom's biggest BNF absolutely loathes Godot, so you're definitely not alone in that regard. You might get some argument from his fans, but that's not the same as getting flamed or being dismissed.

Sorry, I don't mean to paint the fandom in general or Godot's fans in particular in a negative light, it's just that in my experience, mentioning sexism and fandom-related things in the same sentence is generally a recipe for disaster and I didn't really want to risk it, if that makes sense? Though on the whole that hasn't been happening in this post, which is a good sign.

It's okay! I'm not mad or anything, I just like to encourage seeing things from different perspectives. The first three PW games are remarkable for having so much emphasis on women in power, so I like to analyze and discuss that as much as possible. And I can see why people could dislike Diego in general. Egotistical people are awfully love-'em-or-hate-'em.

Glad I could help you find some new points to ponder, OP. More power to ya to dislike any character you want.

This is exactly right.

I mean, even looking at the blame for Phoenix "not protecting Mia", it's more posturing. To me, it was obvious that his biggest motivation, the true reason he was so broken, was what he said about there being no one there when he woke up. He was looking for something that gave his life meaning. That's why he made such a big deal out of "protecting" Maya (and he failed miserably at that) and why he blamed Phoenix for not protecting Mia.

He was a broken man searching for some reason, any reason, why he was still alive when the person he loved was gone and he had been totally forgotten.

It's true. Waking up in a hospital bed weak and alone is a pretty awful fate.

(I'm curious about his recovery, personally. It'd be interesting to see how Diego reacted to the physiotherapy after five years in bed, because a proud guy like him suddenly needing help to stand and walk and get around while sightless? Ouch.)
