Look upthread for the discussion of morally ambiguous characters. It's not about over simplifying, it's about acknowledging what characters do in the text.

I'd like to believe that it's on purpose, but honestly, I don't think most creators are that nuanced. Pretty sure that a lot of the time when I see this happening, it's a case of not having the time for deep character development.
