I'm always a little taken aback when authors react with shock that fanfic is a thing, but then I remember that if you got your start when fic only existed in zines and didn't get randomly mentioned in non-fandom contexts, you very well may have not have prepared yourself for the fact that people would likely make up their own stories about your characters and write them down (even if pastiches were already a known phenomenon). Any author starting more recently shouldn't be able to make that excuse, although they certainly don't have to read it and should be able to protect their intellectual property.
