I hate Kubrick's because the dad doesn't go crazy. Nicholson just acts crazy from the beginning. There is no decline into madness.

well said.
Stephen King himself said something to the effect of "it's a very effective horror movie but it has little or nothing to do with my book."

100% agreed. I don't much like Nicholson as an actor anyway because I think he always plays the same character. And here it was massively to the detriment of the movie.

The reason Jack Nicholson did so well playing the Joker in Batman was because Nicholson is pretty much only one small step away from being the Joker IRL.

But he plays that one character very well, I think. And I don’t agree that it was a detriment to the movie at all.

(Don’t mind me, I’m apparently very easily defensive about this movie and how much I love it, and that’s not the problem or concern of people who dislike and criticize it.)

It's sorta that for me too, in that I think Jack is a self-deluded person to begin with, so it's not a far slide even in the book. But part of creepiness in the book is that Jack's toxic and abusive behavior had been normalized to the family so much that neither they nor Jack (and to some extent the audience) could tell when it turned into a type of possession, and Nicholson basically played that as static.

Then I hate how Kubrick characterized Wendy and Hallorann, and I don't think he understood or cared about the tone of the original, so.
