If Rian hadn't casually offed Snoke instead of developing him, then they wouldn't have had to bring back Palpy.

... they could have just developed Hux instead or made Kylo truly evil or have some sort of evil council or whatever. It's not like they had absolutely no choice.
Plus the whole Rey Palpatine thing.
(I say that as someone who would have liked Snoke as the main villain all the way through.)

Rey being a Palps was the second best thing they could have done with her character. The best would have been making her a Kenobi. Rey Kenobi, it just rolls off the tongue.

I think the best thing they could have done with Rey was make her the force-reincarnation of Anakin Skywalker.

Rey as Anakin's do-over would have been a m a z i n g.

I think you've found the only thing that would have been more divisive than making her a Palpatine. Lets give a big hand for all the intentional outrage that plan Turn Anakin Into A Chick would have created.

Developing Hux as a bigger villain would have been cool but after the complete shitty butt-of-every-joke treatment he got in TLJ I feel it would have been a bit tricky to pull off.

Ren and the First Order worked just as fine as villains, we didn't need another one. Killing off Snoke was a great thing that would have led to the third one doing new and interesting things and not being just a bad copy of the OT if Abrams hadn't backpedaled and tried to give the loudest fans what they wanted, which ended up with a movie that was all fanservice to a level that made the actual plot incoherent.

Killing Snoke was a dumb idea, it made an already empty movie that prioritized spectacle and quips over coherent plot even emptier. TLJ was a bad movie with nothing in it beyond spectacle and bad jokes. At least JJ tried putting some plot in his, whether you agree with it being similar to the other movies or not.

I don't agree with any of that. I think TLJ had much more and much better plot than TROS. Agree to disagree.

TLJ was a bad copy as well in so many regards. Why do people still think it wasn't?

Because it made people who liked the older stuff, and TFA, sad. It was a pure hatefic. They don't think TLJ was good, but they are just willing to pretend they do because it upset people who cared about the characters and the setting.

DA but they're not entirely wrong about it being hatefic considering that's what the director more or less admitted. The whole thing about nobody truly liking the movie is bullshit, obviously, but that a whole lot of decisions were made just to spite old fans of the franchise is kind of a fact.

Yeah that's pretty dumb. It's not exactly unfathomable that plenty of people would like the movie, be it just in general or for being different or whatever reason, even if I don't, personally.

But it's just as much of an opinion, not a fact, that TFA was a bad copy and yet the person I replied to (as well as many other people) present it as a fact as well. Why don't you whine at them, too?

Where did they state their opinion, and then go “why can’t more people see this??”. Because until they actually frame it as people with differing opinions just “don’t see the truth”, they’re not on the same level, nor are they treating their opinion as fact.

It's kind of implied that they think TLJ is somehow not a bad copy of the OT while TFA is so they also present their opinion as fact.

I guess it’s possible.
