Well, I once posted a secret saying I was happy about some writing decision in a new adaptation and the comment section was full of folks complaining that it was a stupid writing decision because THAT isn't how it was done in the ORIGINAL material, HOW DARE THEY, etc, etc. I guess it's not half as bad as being harassed or called stupid myself, but you know. It kind of kills the mood.

Eh. One thread with reactions to a secret on fandomsecrets isn't exactly an overarching fandom experience.

DA

Everyone here is recounting anecdotal experiences either way. I honestly believe this is a rare time where it can be considered a “both sides” thing. And by that I mean both sides can be toxic at times, but aren’t inherently that way.

I think the difference between these cases of anecdotal evidence is the scale of it - one thread in a frankly pretty small and by now fairly obscure corner of fandom and people invading whole fandoms tags on big platforms en masse to shout at older fans for "doing it wrong" Fully agreed on the "both sides can be toxic" though, just the two examples people were talking about here are scaled a bit different (and the format/type of engagement is very different as well re:comments of a secret vs. trouble in the main fandom tag).

Good point.

And I posted here venting my frustration with new material, and got a bunch of people coming in to tell me how the new material is oh-so-wonderful. Both things happen, and it sucks even more when it's the whole fandom telling you you're wrong to be upset when everything you loved has been changed because the new stuff is So Much Better!
