102. THIS. I so thought that when I was a kid. I was like "What?! Bitch, you have everything." To me Ariel is everything I detest in a Disney female.
104. Fuck....I admit it. Shut the fuck up about her eye. You are just jealous and you know it. :P
136. Just saw it today, and I agree. About him and about it being medicore. I don't understand the hype.
139. That's because her relationship with her father is 100% unrealistic bullshit. lol

Yeah, about as much unrealistic bullshit as advanced stage Stockholm Syndrome.

Logically, when someone is shooting iron balls at you for 14 years, the response is either fear or hatred. That's just my opinion though. I suppose Stockholm Syndrome could apply if you stretch it.

Time for a thought experiment, for you or the OP. Say merfolk exist. Say there's evidence in your world that merfolk exist, that people see them sometimes, and maybe the little shell things they wear in their hair washing up on the shore, or maybe there's pictures of their architecture, or something. Do you think you'd be interested in those sorts of things? Do you think you might lose interest in your everyday life because mermaids exist right next to you and that's so incredibly awesome? Do you think, if you were so fascinated by the merfolk, that you'd probably romanticize their life or even wish you were one, too?

Now, what if you were on the beach one day, and you saw a very very very attractive mermaid or merman of the gender of your preference. Say that mermaid or merman was beached, and would die if s/he didn't get back into the water soon, and you help him or her get back into the ocean. Say you wished you were part of the merfolk before. Do you think you'd feel even more compelled to want to be a mermaid or merman now, even if you had friends and a life on land?

Do you think that if the opportunity came by at more or less that time to become a mermaid or merman, it would be reasonable for you to take it? Or maybe not even reasonable, but sympathetic, or likely?

Congratulations, that's exactly how Ariel felt.

If I met someone from another country and we just clicked and I had always expressed interest this other country, would I leave my family, friends just to be with them? NO

Now as for what you were saying. That's even worse because I'd have to become another species and thus be separated completely. No I would not do that. Not when I have a loving father whose world evolves around me, awesome friends, sisters who are annoying but still care, prestige. No, I would not. Not for one man(and some trinkets). That's just silly, illogical, and not to mention irresponsible.

I also think the original story of the Little Mermaid expressed her struggles more. In the original, she had to either kill the man she loved or turn to sea foam. I don't remember exactly if this was the original or just another version of the original but it was a little bit more realistic.

I'm pretty sure that was the original. She had to make him fall in love with her in order to get a soul (so she wouldn't become foam on the sea) but if she failed to do that in a certain amount of time she'd become foam on the sea right away. When he cared for her as a little sister but fell in love with somebody else, she had the choice whether to kill him and be a mermaid again, or go ahead and become foam on the sea right away, and she chose not to kill him because she loved him still. Because of that, she got the chance to earn herself a soul and a place in heaven.

So pretty much, you're right.

I guess it seemed like the logical course of action because if it were me, and I'd always loved some world and finally met someone amazing from there, even if it was only a friendship scenario rather than love, I'd definitely consider going back with them. I don't feel very rooted to much of anything, and there are only several people I'd feel bad about leaving to go be a mermaid or whatever. Not saying I'd definitely go, but yes, it would be a realistic option for me. I suppose that makes me unlikeable to some people, but whatever. I don't feel being loved should be a responsibility.

I guess I'm happy for you that you do have a lot of people you know and love that you'd want to stay with, even at the cost of some potentially amazing adventure.

Thanks. I think I get it from your point of view. If you haven't got much to lose then why not, right? I have too many reasons why I couldn't and wouldn't want to do something like that. First of all, anyone worth your love wouldn't need you to make a choice like that. In her case she had to leave it behind, but to do that she had to leave her best friend in the world(fuck I couldn't do that. Poor fish) and her father who most people would die to have. He pracially almost died for her. Yeah, not worth it. At least the movie didn't develop it enough to make it seem worth it.

What I find most dicouraging is the sequel and what Ariel becomes. She builds a wall to block out the sea cutting all contact from her friends and family. And for what? To become a house-wife/princess? She lost all her freedom, her personailty, what made her...well her, all for some man who barely shows his face. Plus, she hurts her daughter in the process who just wants to know her own family. Ariel changes from a free spirit to a mega bitch and that is just sad and pathetic. There were no "adventures" anymore with her.

Anyone worth your love would accept your friends and family, too, but in the case of Ariel and Eric, there really isn't a middle ground. He could come paddle out in a boat to see her? She could swim over to the docks? That sort of thing is probably fine for friends or dating, but if they actually wanted to be married and live together... yeah, they'd need to make a choice like that, and he didn't have any desire to become a merman. I like to think that Ariel still kept in contact with Triton and Flounder this sort of way.

I don't like the sequel or consider it canon, and not many other people do, either. It's an entire repeat of Ariel's story arc, but with the girl wanting to become a mermaid instead of a human, probably because since mermaids are full of awesome, we can relate to that more. In order to do that, Ariel's character is completely derailed. I can see Ariel having flaws as a parent. She might take after her dad in the overprotectiveness department, or she might be too permissive if she's trying not to become overprotective. I picture her more being a little strange and possibly embarrassing, what with her enthusiasm at really mundane things. But making her into nothing more than a foil for a repeat of the same story isn't fair to her character, and most fans agree.
(on a side note, the only Disney sequel I really do like and consider canon is The Lion King 2. Simba's older and wiser, but based on the first movie, him ending up older and wiser makes sense. And he doesn't get derailed or made ineffectual. ilu simba <3333 )

On another side note, would you prefer the resolution to their story arc in Kingdom Hearts 2? Ariel's a mermaid and Eric's still a human, but they're still going to see each other. (Of course, this probably just exists so that Ariel can come back or be playable again in any future Kingdom Hearts games, but whatever...)

Well, he could have become one.(would have been a more unexpected ending, at least. Him giving it all up for her. Ha) XD Either way someone loses dearly, but at least Eric didn't seem to have much of a family besides being a prince. No I guess that it wouldn't work if they wanted marriage or sex I guess. Eh, I'm conflicted because I like Aeril ten times better before she gave it all up. She was adventurous, care-free, stubborn. Even though she loves Eric, being with him is a less adventurous life either way you look at it(remember the series on Disney about her just causing trouble? That's her). Eric has got a kingdom to run after all. It is not like they can run around goofing off forever.(which is what I think fits Aeril more then settling down and having kids) So, yes I prefer the Kingdom Hearts 2 scenario, actually. Meeting each other isn't the fullest relationship ever but they both have responsibilities and I think Aeril taking over her father's rule would be the more interesting story, instead of them just falling in love..lalala happy ending. Running out in the dead of night to meet in secret? Now that's adventurous, especially if it is to escape the their responsibilities and have fun, if only for awhile.

Unfornately, Little Miramaid 2 did happen and regardless of wether or not you consider it canon, Aeril would still settle down and help run the kingdom, which I don't conider very exciting, but she does love the human world luxuries so maybe that is what she would want. Idk. I just like her the way she used to be.

I loved Lion King 2, esspically uniting the tribes at the end. It was a nice little follow up to 1 that resloved all the lose ends.
