Sorry I didn't get back to this sooner, stupid timezones :/

Reading this and your thread on page 1, I understand where you're coming from, and I agree, to a point - yeah, I don't think people should assume that dislike or even bashing of a female character comes from ignorance or misogyny (on a personal level, I know I would and do resent being accused of sexism for how much I dislike Rinoa in FFVIII), and in a way the fact that it happens is sad from a feminist perspective in itself, that all female characters are held up to be representatives of Women Generally where male ones aren't. OTOH, I'd say that "knee-jerk reaction in defense of a favourite character" and "knee-jerk feminist frustration at the apparent trotting out of shit they've seen over and over again" can look very similar, and I'd hesitate to say it's more often the former than the latter. I also agree, though, that feminism can be a very powerful tool of silencing in a predominantly liberal space like lj - you line it up ostensibly on your side, and conveniently position everyone who disagrees with you as anti-feminist, which is a great way to shut down discussion. I have to say, though, I haven't seen that happening in many places - but then we probably hang out in different corners of fandom, idk.

Wrt the other side of it, the idea that people give the feelings of fictional people more time and regard than those of real people, I think that's true, and very interesting - I don't know why it happens, probably some mixture of the kind of reading that fans practice, and the obvious distance of fiction from RL and RL consequences. Lets you attempt to understand things in a character that if they turned up in an acquaintance, you'd be horrified (justifiably or otherwise). I feel like that's not necessarily a female-character-specific thing, though - although I suppose if you're talking about ignoring the feelings of people in ljfandom, who are mostly women, then you need that for rhetorical symmetry.

I really need to stop leaving small essays on f!s :/
