This is more common than you think, OP, especially among very sensitive and creative kids. I agree with the person who said that it's more like an imaginary friend than anything else - and it's also true that someone's work across the years can reach out and touch someone long after the creator is dead. It's a big part of why art is so important, it's potentially a little touch of immortality, a way to communicate with people in the future who the artist will never meet.

I'm glad you had a good connection with this person, OP. It might sound silly now, but it sounds like this helped you through some rough times. I'm sure the artist would be happy to know that.
