Somehow I knew you would show up.

Please, show me what the US has done that they've deliberately kept glossed over and hidden in their history. They're quite rightly (and soundly) criticized for the wrongs perpetrated against the Native American Nations, African slaves, the firebombings of WW2, the Atmoic Bomb, the Vietnam War etc.

Anything from Japan (or Germany for that matter) would not sit well with me if it made light of the Second World War due to their involvement in perpetrating the war and the atrocities committed by their governments. And yes, I've read some of it.

Oh, don't forget about the internment camps for the Japanese we had.

Of course not. A truly dark part of US history. Though I don't think one can really compare them to the concentration camps of Germany or the POW camps of the Japanese.

Yup, pretty much this.

Why? I'm not even a Hetalia fan.

Please show me something the Japanese have done that the writer of Hetalia, who as far as I know isn't even living in Japan, has glossed over or portrayed as correct.

Anything from Japan (or Germany for that matter) would not sit well with me if it made light of the Second World War due to their involvement in perpetrating the war and the atrocities committed by their governments. And yes, I've read some of it.

That sounds like a personal problem as opposed to an inability of the Japanese and the Germans to ever admit culpability.

You seem to enjoy running around and White Knighting.

Let's see now...he makes a comic claiming to be about history, even though I'd call it's historical aspects limited at best and fails to include anything (as far as I've seen) about the Rape of Nanking, the treatment of POWs taken by the Japanese, the brutal treatment of occupied territories...as for the japanese government, they still deny some of the well-known aspects of their occupation of China and Korea, and their history texts about the WW2 in their schools are limited in their scope at best.

Perhaps. I did say that it was my opinion after all. Though I don't know why feeling uncomfortable about the perpetrators of one of the must destructive wars in history making light of it would be called a "personal problem."

"White Knighting?" Hardly. Arguing with people, perhaps.

It's a parody comic. Hetalia doesn't include anything about the treatment of PoWs, sure, but it doesn't include a lot of the more macabre stuff about the war, as far as I'm aware. Do you really think it's unfairly biased about Japan and Germany's behaviour? How have you determined this?

History textbooks rarely say too much that's negative about the countries in which they're published. I'm assuming you're American, so correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems a lot like throwing stones from within a glass house. On top of that - this person is studying history in university. An American university, from what I've heard. How can you justify calling him ignorant on the grounds of being Japanese without falling into racist stereotyping yourself?

How is it not problematic to paint every single member of a nation as ignorant and unable to learn, understand or admit the truth? How is it not problematic to be unable to differentiate individual persons from their government?

Fair enough.

Just because something is a parody doesn't mean people can't find it offensive. Personally, I find it a little offensive and more over a poor portrayal of history. As for the portrayal of Japan and Germany...while I have read some, my reading of the comic has been sporadic. I don't claim that it's biased, only that I find it in poor taste.

Really? How many university level history texts have you cracked open? I'm a History major at an American university and there is -plenty- of negativity. The primary textbook we used in one of my classes was all about the Western world and how it screwed the rest of the planet. Further, I wouldn't call him ignorant. His comic just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I am blaming the government for the people's ignorance. I am certain that Japanese people, should they have the motivation to, would be able to learn and discern history if they put the effort into it, just like anyone else on the planet. My problem lies primarily with the Japanese government. However, until the Japanese government fixes the oversights and ignorance it perpetrates, I can't take any parody or light-hearted treatment of the Second World War coming out of the nation without a hefty pinch of salt, at the least.
