OP, I'm going to take a wild guess and assume you're white, because I can't imagine a POC posting this... One of the reasons that Racefail09 is still dragging on is because of people like you who said, "this makes me uncomfortable, so you should all stop talking about it."

Look, I know we were brought up to avoid ever discussing race, and that we were taught that acknowledging race is rude (with the unspoken implication that white people do not have a race and being nonwhite is some defect that people just can't help, it's not their fault they were born that way). And I know that when people do talk about it we have this squirmy feeling in our stomachs as we remember all the unintentionally racist things we've said or done in our lives.

BUT. This uncomfortableness is important. It is your conscience reminding you that yes, racism is an important thing, it is still around and it is not just confined to personal insults or acts. Just because you yourself don't intentionally do racist things doesn't mean that the problem doesn't exist, and when you dismiss a discussion of race the way you just did, you are saying, "You people are making me question my worldview, so I'm just going to announce that you don't matter."

This is wrong, wrong, WRONG, so wrong it's not even funny. Normally I would agree with you about internet wankfests-- I love them because it gives me something to point and laugh at. But this one isn't about shipping wars, it's about a Real Life Issue that affects fandom in every aspect. And if you go through [livejournal.com profile] rydra_wong's comprehensive list of links, you will get a bunch of better explanations than I can give you right now-- though if you only read one thing, read this (http://mmcisaac.faculty.asu.edu/emc598ge/Unpacking.html).

My point is, who are you to tell people to STFU about something like this? We-- fans of color + white fans like me-- are never going to shut up until other people stop plugging their ears and singing, "La-la-la, can't hear you!"

...I should have just come here first. XD

But yes, I agree I agree I agree. Especially with the second paragraph.

All the people going "HOW DARE YOU SPEAK OUT AGAINST SOCIAL INJUSTICE!!!11" just make it obvious to me how comfortable they are with said social injustice. Hopefully, the less defensive ones will read people's comments again and think about what is being said.

This times 10 million.

The person who tells you your house is on fire is almost always the firefighter, not the arsonist. Save your anger for the arsonist, and work with the firefighter to save your house.

so what is the solution?

what is coming out of all this discussion that can be applied to real life?

all I'm seeing all that meta is a whole lot of intellectual jerking off.

The solution? Depends on the situation, I guess... If you're someone with editorial power in the SF/F world, try and make your publications a bit more diverse. If you are in a group of people and someone makes a racist comment, call them out on it instead of laughing along uncomfortably. If you are a parent and you see your little kid teasing others for their skin color or accent or the shapes of their eyes, explain to them why it's wrong instead of saying, "oh, they're just playing, they don't mean it." Etcetera. You get the idea.

As for getting rid of racism on an institutional level, oh man, that is a hard one. But the first step is getting people to acknowledge that it exists.

Actually I think there's a link to a PDF that addresses practical solutions, buried somewhere deep inside [livejournal.com profile] rydra_wong's linkspam.

Please to STFU if you have been avoiding what's happening so you don't know what's going on.

You have to love (and by "love" here I mean "hate") people who are all 'I HAVEN'T BEEN FOLLOWING THIS BUT LET ME TELL YOU WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT IN MY DISMISSIVE, CONDESCENDING PLONKING TONE.'

A-fucking men. "What is the solution?" I love that kind of crap.
