I have a clue. And I'm tired of hearing about it. Therefore, I choose not to participate in it.

Mmmmmm. White privilege. It tastes so good.

Oh wait. I still can't get married. I've been ostracized from my family. I'm in danger of being killed for expressing who I am.

L2empaty yourself.

... and you still have white privilege. Funny how that works.

I fail to see how that equates. Or are you going to blame that on "white privilege" as well?

Actually, white privilege has a lot to do with failing to see how it equates.

I'm not heterosexual either, if you were wondering.

And like the above poster said, being queer doesn't magically erase your white privilege. The term "white privilege" isn't a personal attack toward you or any other white person (I'm also white).

Trying to "rank" different types of oppression is an un-constructive thing to do. Homophobia is not worse than racism, and vice versa. But if you want the real scoop on both of those things, just ask a queer poc: those two issues don't exist in a vacuum. If you're a woman, for example, you've probably experienced sexism in your life at some point, in addition to homophobia. Different types of oppression and privilege often intersect within the same individual, and it's possible for an individual possess one set of societal privilege and not others.

Thank you. I appreciate the constructive response you gave :)

It just bothers me that many people I've talked to that are involved in this make fantastic assumptions about me based on the fact I'm white. A bit counter-intuitive, actually.

I don't think anyone's made any "assumptions" about you based on the fact that you're white. People have pointed out that you benefit from white privilege, which isn't an assumption: it's a fact. That doesn't make you a Horrible Bad Person, but is something you must be aware of when thinking/speaking about racism. As white people, we have the option of turning away from a discussion of racism when it makes us uncomfortable. That stems from our privilege: poc don't have the option to "turn away", because racism factors deeply into their lives in ways it won't and never has factored into ours. This is the same mechanism that allows straight people to ignore queer issues, men to ignore feminist issues, etc.

If you're unsure about the term "white privilege" and what's meant by that, check out this site (http://mmcisaac.faculty.asu.edu/emc598ge/Unpacking.html). If you scroll down a bit you'll see a numbered checklist, which lays things out pretty clearly.
