I just did this whoooole crazy paper about Lurianic Kabbalah and how Shabbateanism and Hasidism functioned as offshoots of it!

Although in the essay I think I referred to Shabbateanism as Lurianic Kabbalah's "bastard stepchild." I can't wait to get that paper back.

Don't think I've ever learned about the Safed Kabbalists D: When were they around? My Jewish History class (my only formal source of knowledge about Jewish history) is covering 1492 to the present, so maybe they were big before 1492? Or we just skipped them.

They are, theoretically. I think they borrow alot of ideas from it, if memory serves me right (at least on Hasidism).

The Safed mystics.... Somewhere in the late 1500s, the book I wanted to look it up in has been swallowed by my bedroom, however reading wikipedia articles on Moshe Cordovero and Isaac Luria (AKA The Ari, Arizal) that's the closest date I could get. Are you familiar with Lecha Dodi? Written by one of the Safed circle - Shlomo haLevy Alkabetz (my spelling might be off) They were first called the Chaverim, and then changed their name to the Lion Cubs when Luria took over leadership. (What I wouldn't give to read a historical novel about them! OMG the little bits and pieces out of books doesn't paint a clear enough picture.)

If I'm interpreting my readings correctly, Nathan basically claimed that the arrival of the Messiah (aka Zevi) represented the fact that the process of tikkun olam had been completed and the Redemption was coming. And tikkun was a theory that was pretty much introduced and popularized by Lurianic Kabbalah. Hasidism definitely incorporated more aspects of it, though.

I wish you were my professor! I'm in my second semester and have yet to get an A on a paper :( Which is more a reflection of the fact that the profs at my school are hardasses than anything else (all of them have been like "Listen, I hardly ever give As so don't expect one), but still.
