Short answer: I thought it was OK.

Long answer: There's been a bunch of girl-with-gun-assassin movies recently and I don't think any of them are really great. The action scenes are usually fine; where they fail at characterization and atmosphere. For some reason, no one seems to be able to get the assassin part down. If you go and watch Le Samourai, or example, or The Killer, it's easy to see how important this is. Le Samourai isn't really an action movie at all. The Killer, while it has amazing action scenes (it is the best action movie ever made), also has amazing atmosphere and character. Beyond their action scenes, those movies spend a lot of time convincing us that Alain Delon and Chow Yun-Fat are the coolest motherfuckers on the face of the earth (admittedly not a difficult task) and sinking us into their worlds, which are deeply atmospheric and aesthetically rich. Same with John Wick - it spends a lot of time establishing the aesthetics and logic of its world, which is quite distinctive, and John Wick's character.

The recent girls-with-guns movies try to do this but I think they generally fail at it - the aesthetic almost always seems perfunctory. They fail to carry it through the whole movie as an organic thing. It's like they're just copying the aesthetic from prior sources (with these recent movies, mostly John Wick). Or maybe the directors just aren't good. Anyway that's basically the same problem I had with Gunpowder Milkshake. Good action, though, and a great, great cast.

thanks, this is helpful. I'm going to give it a try because Lena Headey and Karen Gillan are in it. But I'll go in with low expectations.
