Re: What music (band) from 'before your time' is your favorite?

The Dave Brubeck-style 'cool jazz' (post WWII), swing, big band, folk-type music that was popular on the radio in the 30's, like Woody Guthrie.

It's so weird to see the previous comments to this question all being the music I grew up with...(except for early Elvis).

Oooh, good choice there. I almost added something about 30s-ish big band/swing being my favorite musical style after 60s/70s. It's kind of hard to find good sources for it beyond the handful of artists everyone's heard of though - what I've got was mostly passed on to me by a friend who was happy to just randomly send me MP3s of stuff but never really commented on who else I might like.

It is hard to find stuff sometimes out of a very narrow window. If you google 'depression era folk music', at the top of the page (at least for me), is a big list of YouTube vids that are a variety of artists - Guthrie and Leadbelly, but also Black Ivory King, The Carolina Tar Heels, Eddie Cantor.... It's mostly a case of research and search, heh.

This is also an interesting article that might give you some ideas.

Oh yeah, that definitely looks helpful. And yeah, I guess in this day and age I could just browse around YouTube. (Maybe I'd even find some of the WWII-era songs that I heard when I was younger but never learned the name/artist of. I managed to identify one when the aforementioned friend sent me an MP3 of it, hahah.)

Thanks for the tips! Watch me wind up burning another mix CD to listen to at top volume in the car which will make my neighbors go "wtf?" ;)

Heeeeeeeee!!
I do a lot of poking around on YouTube at 1am at work; everyone asleep, nothing for me to do but basically 'be there', in case, and man the phone....
