THANK YOU SO FUCKING MUCH! I am so THRILLED that I'm not the only one who hates that! Especially with "romantic" fics, when sex is supposed to be on a deeper emotional level. It's ridiculous, rude, disgusting, and, when done completely WRONG, absolutely offensive to the characters and to the creators of whatever fandom is being written about.

What kind of words do you prefer?

Like I said, I'll take the actual words over crass slang terms. I tend, when I see words like the ones mentioned in the secret, to click back without reading farther. There are some exceptions, of course, like stories about hate sex or dirty talk, stuff like that. But with stories that are supposed to be romantic, if it's not in-character for them to be thinking in those terms? It's sloppy writing.

But 'cock and pussy' are actual words.

But they're slang terms, which means they aren't a free-for-all for every occasion. And some writers think they're fine for any fandom and character, when they don't always fit.

Like, for example, would a vampire from the 1600s honestly think in terms of "dick?" Isn't that a more recently-coined phrase for penis?

But slang words in general, even the non-sexual words, are not always appropriate. I tend to wince in period films when people use the word "okay," which is a far newer word.

'Dick'? I don't know. No OED on hand. 'Cock' goes back longer than 'penis', iirc. And I just went against the advice I'm about to give, but unless you actually know the providence of a word, it's best to not speculate about how old it is.

And here's another thing: slang words? Are still words, and they're just as respectable and wordy as medical terms. They're not lesser, they're different. You wouldn't use them in a formal paper, but porn? Is not a formal paper.

Personally, 'penis' throws me out of a fic quicker than 'cock' does. People have different opinions on what words to use in smut, but don't claim your preferences are better because of some inherent quality.

I agree that slang isn't always appropriate, but I'd disagree with why--it's not a matter of whether or not the slang is appropriately aged (though many of the "slang" terms for sex organs have a long enough history that thinking of them as slang is pretty laughable), but whether or not the character in question would use slang.

Very few people think of their penis/vagina by the technical terms. Most people are going to think of their cock, or their pussy, or whatever, and the best word for a sex scene in my personal opinion is whatever word the POV character would use. I like deep POV. Not everyone does, so if it doesn't float your boat, well, I can respect that. But there are very, very valid, very appropriate reasons to use "slang," even in romantic scenes.

I mostly agree with you, but 'cock' (and fuck en fait) dates back to at least the sixteenth century and was used by gentry and peasant alike. Which is part of the reason I can usually accept it in narrative; it has a history in literature and it doesn't sound as juvenile IMO.

Personally, I'd prefer an author avoid calling out the bits by any name if they can do so without being awkward. Even the technical terms are a little distracting.

See, but in REAL life, there are people, in romantic moments, who would NEVER use 'penis' and 'vagina' and 'her sex'. They would never say those things because they would be pulled out of the moment.

Example: you're writing a third person fic about teenaged boys (a common occurrence in fanfiction). It wouldn't seem odd to use euphemisms?

A lot of characters come off weird if you use 'polite' terms. And to say it's rude, ridiculous, and disgusting is a bit much. For some characters it's 'inappropriate'-- I don't see how rude comes into it.

Re: 167

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-03-18 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it can be rude, if the rest of the fanfic has a kind of exploitative tone, but that's porn for ya.

Re: 167

[identity profile] faith-harris.livejournal.com 2009-03-18 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
If the fic is, as a whole, intended to be rude, that's different than saying that the use of slang words like 'pussy' is offensive.
