I'm not sure I agree. There are people who pretend to be a different gender on the internet for attention, but there are also people who are exploring their gender identity in a safer environment that rl, or how acting within gender conventions can change behavior and how people react to you.

The bottom line: if someone wants to be referred to as a 'he', then I use 'he'.

No, you also got the 'pretending to be male to avoid being hit on and condescended to'. I'm female and cisgendered, but when I was younger and people on the internet assumed I was male, I never corrected them because I didn't want to deal with being ignored in discussions and asked to post pictures of my boobs.

I think intent is everything. There's a difference between being a guy (particularly a gay one) online/in fandom for the attention it causes and doing it for the reasons you and I and others are saying.

I don't think intent matters. It's what you do, not why you do it. Moreover, I don't know what someone's intent is. Even if they do start out pretending to be a different gender for the attention, maybe they end up doing it for another reason. I can speculate about it in my head ("X is really a woman!"), but if they self-present as male, I take them at their word.

I take people at their word too. We can't know intent unless people say it, so it's easier to trust, both online and IRL. Honestly, though? If I knew because someone had stated that it's just for attention? I'd probably be a little peeved at first, then let it go like I do almost anything else that gets to me.
