Bad example, perhaps, with Matt. I guess the point is, that while the Death Note fan love is a little weird and obsessive and a lot undeserved, they're still actually writing about a minor character. You can talk about Matt fans and be discussing a real demographic in the fandom. But "Eri fans"? That just sounds weird. Haven't heard much about the Shiki fans, either.

I guess I've just convinced myself that if everyone in the game was genderswapped, then the fandom would love Eri/Shiki so much that people would complain about the sheer volume of Eri/Shiki on the internet and can't they please write something else (I AM LOOKING AT YOU, JOSHUA AND NEKU.) And if people are more interested in reading about boys than girls, well, that's their preference and it doesn't bother me. It just feels really unfair to me that the ficcers and artists are willing to expand a lot on the character of a cute boy, but won't even do it a little for a girl. Like, I expect fandom to prefer boys to girls to some degree, but... gah. Eri doesn't need Matt-level love, but can't we at least like her?

also why does every TWEWY discussion automatically become about our opinions on yaoiJoshua?

also also the "everyone's forgotten that Neku tried to kill Shiki" discussion has given me a serious case of plotbunny.

Alas, I know a little how that feels. Taking a liking to the characters that don't get as much of the spotlight as others is always a harsh thing. Although I suppose that, at least compared to almost every other relationship, theirs don't get a whole lot of time to make an impression. I mean heck, even the surfer dude and his girlfriend get more screentime than Shiki and Eri. I suppose that ultimately, when even the game itself doesn't even want to spend more than a day on showing Shiki's motivations and development, it doesn't exactly help her chances of finding fans.

And that would be because Joshua's doucheness is a subject with a wide variety of spectrums, and in order to explore them all long and arduous discussion is nec- okay, it's just that the things that I actuallyfind appealing about Joshua, what a novel villain (yes I consider him the antagonist) and schemer he is, how he manages to be a credible threat while still remaining a very petulant and even somewhat childish creature, is by and large ignored by fandom's collective squeeing over how "adorable" he is. BLECH I SAY.

And and: consider my interest piqued and do keep me posted...
