If there is a gay character and he has a female best friend, I will almost always ship him with her as opposed to any of his designated canon love interests because most established romances in fiction don't interest me in the way they play out ala narrative; I will ship straight guys with their male best friends too.

I can't think of a specific instance where I ship a gay male with his female friend. But I do tend to ship a lot of best friend ships and tend to gravitate towards ships where the characters are close friends first, regardless of whether the ship is canon or not.
