Oh man. Did poor Bernard die? I don't really know much about the relationship between gangrene and sepsis, like whether someone with such advanced gangrene would be fatally septic by that point.

Yes, but of liver failure from drinking meths all the time. The show makes a point of saying it is dry gangrene and not wet gangrene, turns out dry gangrene is pretty survivable. It tissue death through restriction of the bloodflow rather than infection of tissues, so no bloodflow into the tissue but also no blood back out carrying infection either. If you are gonna get gangrene, then dry gangrene is the one to get, they can just amputate back to where there is healthy bloodflow and tissue. Obviously no gangrene is the best gangrene though.
