This is 100% legit. If you believe in YKINMKATIOK but you morally judge someone for writing a canonically gay character into a het ship, then I think you're a hypocrite.

That said, what an individual person finds squicky and chooses to avoid is another issue entirely. I typically avoid fics that put a canonically gay character in a het ship. It's not generally something I enjoy. But I wouldn't morally judge the author of the fic for writing it.

They don't necessarily have to reimagine them as straight. They could go a bi direction. It's usually what I do. But I do agree with the OP of this that I think people get too up in their feels about it. It's just regular ship stuff and if it's okay in one direction it should be okay in all because logically there's no difference. Everyone engaging in the fandom is likely going to know it's a change from canon and not have any wrong notions about the nature of what's going on so it's not obscuring any actual rep in my mind. But that's just me.
