Oh I loved these books as a kid. I will try a re-read, thanks OP.

I read all these as an adult and much preferred Talia's story. Probably would have been into the melodrama of Vanyel's story as a teen, but I found it just... boring as an adult. Finding home and a place in the world as Talia did resonated much more.

"Finding a home and a place in the world" is a recurring theme in all of the Valdemar books, IIRC.

I didn't find the Valdemar books until I was an adult and while I liked them a lot, I can see how I would have adored them as a teen. I'm the right age, too, they just weren't in the library and that's the only way I could get books.

I love basically all the Valdemar books, but Vanyel's story is still my favorite. And my second favorite is the very first set of books (chronologically).

It's strange to me that no platform has shown any interest in adapting this for a tv series. I would work very well, there's a lot of world and characters to explore later on, and as far as costly magic CGI go, white horses would be cheaper than most fantasy series. Is Lackey so out of fashion right now?

Ha, after writing this comment I decided to check if something hasn't changed on that front, and there is actually an adaptation planned (of the Vanyel story).

Quick heads up from someone doing a similar reread: for The Oathbound, there is SO MUCH RAPE. I mean, Mercedes Lackey put rape in a lot of her early books but there is SO MUCH in The Oathbound. Just. Fucking everywhere. So you know.
