I don't know about necessary misery, but a character arc and some form of character development and discovery is always nice. Characters should learn something along the way through their story.

And, I mean, people have shipped characters in commercials based on 30 seconds of interaction. These two have a pleasant conversation for 20+ minutes! That's more than enough to run with.

There's probably free CC downloads of Simpsons characters somewhere out there. It may not be full out, but it's a start.

This is me, this is my fanfic preferences in a nutshell. I don't read unhappy endings when I can avoid it, but if there isn't enough angst and hardship in a fic I get bored. Fluff has just never been my scene.
