I don't know about necessary misery, but a character arc and some form of character development and discovery is always nice. Characters should learn something along the way through their story.

This is me, this is my fanfic preferences in a nutshell. I don't read unhappy endings when I can avoid it, but if there isn't enough angst and hardship in a fic I get bored. Fluff has just never been my scene.

actually, makes plenty of sense. a happy ending is all the more gratifying if it feels earned, gotten through grief and struggle.

I like a little struggle and angst, but I really don't enjoy a story that is 99% misery, unhappiness, struggle, pain, etc., with a final chapter (or half chapter!) where things are resolved and people are finally happy - or getting there.

That makes me feel like I was cheated out of getting to see these characters I like actually BEING happy.

I just don't like prolonged and/or over-the-top angst.

This is me and my collection of Hurt/comfort and Angst with a happy ending tags. Anything that can get me close-to-crying-sad but has a happy resolve is a gem to me.

I like it when the happy ending is written proportional to the struggle, but lighter conflict doesn't bother me. Sometimes every chapter is a new conflict until there's way to much trauma for "and they got married and had kids" as an ending. I'm actually really fascinated by the ones where the struggle seems pretty light to me, but the happy ending is written with way more catharsis then I think the plot deserved.

I view it as more a matter of structures. Do the earlier chapters contain the seed of how the characters will overcome their problems in the later chapters? But it often cashes out the same, because the seed of how to handle the problem is often to look at the problem head-on and accept the pain that comes with it.

I'm sorry, but which fandoms are you finding this trope in? so I can avoid them entirely. I have never seen it but I also have a weird pool of fandoms I dip into.

If there is one thing all these years in fandom has taught me, it is you can always go lower and weirder. You just have to push yourself. Honestly, two disembodied voices is not the weirdest I've seen.
