131.) Fff, sorry- I didn't mean "obviously", I meant "actually". xD;;

131. In that way, the movie of Watchmen has a much lighter ending. In fact, Ozymandias as a whole seems a lot more sincere. In the comic I felt much more ambivalent towards him.

Dude named after Ramses II? Never a good sign.

I actually got that same sense of him doing it to prove to himself that he CAN do it in the movie that I got in the book. Like, it was self-gratification. "I rock so much, I can save the world!"

I dunno. I've never liked him. =/

It WAS a lot lighter in the movie- I still think it's just temporary, though.

I can't say I actually dislike any of the characters, because most of them are halfways figures, made up in part by who they are as human beings, and what they symbolize or represent. And I can't hate anything that gives me an excuse to blow smoke, as I love to do oh so much. ;P

Towards the end of the comic I was more inclined with Rorschach's "Never compromise" position, probably because I, like you, didn't feel as the world was spared at all. Partly because we didn't have Manhattan's pessimistic line, and also because, in that in the movie, you're sitting there with Nixon. You're TOLD what's going on if nothing is done, and so the necessity of Ozymandias' intervention is emphasized. While Watchmen was definitely close to Doomsday in the comics, the impending Armageddon was not portrayed as viscerally.

Furthermore, you also know Ozymandias' victims in the comic. Hell, you probably like them. While you did get a glimpse of the comic book kid, the vendor, and the psychiatrist at the end, I don't think it has the same emotional impact. The deaths became more statistical, millions for billions. It's easier to drown out your innate need for judgment, truth, and retribution without that connection to the victims.

Oh, and just so we're clear, I'm just exploring how the two mediums differed, not bashing one or the other. Because the movie? Was the best cinematic experience of my life.

WATCHMEN WOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

I would add that in the comic, Ozymandias was less sure of his plan. He seemed sort of... slightly shocked and amused in the comic that he managed to get away with it and that everyone outside of Karnak seemed to fall for the deception. In the film, he's far more confident, far more sure that what he did was the right thing, and more clearly the pacifist that sees what he's done as the sacrifice to save the Earth from seemingly-imminent destruction... and because the victims don't have the same connection to the viewer as they do in the comic, the audience is more inclined to agree with what he's done (even when they sympathize with Rorschach more).

Personally, I love how both the comic and the film are really quite complex works. It's the sort of stuff that people walk out of discussing and the various opinions can be supported well by the material. It allows people to dive into their own morals and philosophies and present them using the characters, and that's really cool.

Really? I thought it was the other way around, personally. But I agree about feeling more ambivalent toward him in the comic, except I, I guess, liked him better-- he felt less morally gray in the movie and much more like we were supposed to out-and-out hate him. But that's just my $.02, everyone's going to have their own opinions.

Re: 131

Yeah, and I guess part of it is how you would react to his actor's choices, appearance, accent, etc. vs. how you read his voice in the comic in your own mind. Reading the comic, you have a great deal more interpretive control.

What might trigger "villain" for some people due to the tropes and media they consume might not have the same affect for others. Although there are many interpretations for the character that can be well-supported, whether people like or dislike a character can just be based on how his "type" rubs them a certain way.

Funnily enough, I liked him better in the movie until the (changed) ending.

Why do you think that is?

Re: 131

[identity profile] oldstarnewshine.livejournal.com 2009-03-19 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I dunno, actually. I think some of it was that comic!Adrian is sort of humble, in a weird, backwards way, and seeing him as a grump with a massive chip on his shoulder was an interesting spin on it.

Re: 131

[identity profile] vivalana.livejournal.com 2009-03-19 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Ok, I really need to reread Watchmen, because I didn't read that into Ozymandias at all. Of course, this might be due to his character design. I have a specific bias against the square-jawed, broad-shouldered, blond, blue-eyed Übermensch image, so I'm curious how much of my reading is from the comic, and how much is it from my own predisposition.

I found the movie ending more upsetting because it was more people, which is daft I suppose because of course the people dying in the book was awful too, but the scale got me more in the movie. (Also the lack of squid made it more believable to me.) And yet I liked Adrian more because he came across as less arrogant, and more sincere I found him very irritating in the book actually.
