If they happen to be a couple in a fanfic that has one of my favorite couples, I'll still read it, but I'll probably skim or just outright skip over their parts.
It was fandom that ended up ruining the couple for me, not canon. LeexSakura was my favorite couple when I first got into Naruto, and searching for fics became a big trial process. Fan pages for the couple were really small and ff.net didn't have that neat little character selection that they do now. So whenever I'd go hunting I'd have to go through pages and pages of crap, and >50% of the stories were listed with at least one of the following couples: NaruHina SasuSaku NejiTen ShikaIno. And a lot of the time those four couples were listed together. I began to resent the couples for having to see them all the time with many crappy little summaries - "can twu wuvu wuvu conquer all?!!!11" - and immature, obsessive fangirls (not to insult anyone specifically, I know that not all people who fan over the couple are like that, but I came across quite a few like that during the time... so I'm sorry if you feel insulted). Some would review LeeSaku stories and say stuff like, "ewww! Lee is so ugly!" or "Lee/Saku is so gross!" (I know b/c if they had a ff.net account I'd go to see what kind of stories they'd read or write).
Honestly, in the canon, I'm happy for Hinata. I'm glad she found her confidence. And if they end up together it's no skin off my back. Canon isn't the be all, end all for me. But I still won't ever ship 'em in the fandom.

I've always hated ShikaIno not because of how ridiculously crack the ship was (No evidence; Only rabid fans) but the delusional fandom itself. They bash Temari all of the time, but nobody ever bothers Ino because she's the "perfect" beloved popular character. Temari isn't nearly as popular, so not as many people defend her.
I don't see what's so great about NH, either. It's just amusing to finally see people hate it, and not glorify it as much anymore.

Plus, internet polls are never accurate. I learned this as a supporter of Barack Obama before he became President. internet polls are defined by the type of people that go on a website, it's not a random sample.
Plus, if this was just a pairing poll with het pairings, that would explain it too. BL pairings always tend to be more popular in fandom. Just look at Harry Potter with its Harry/Draco fans.
