I think it may be a combination of things - he may have had a somewhat feminine appearance to start with and just made it work to his advantage in terms of ideology. Then again, I guess we'll never know, since I'd put money on his body having been destroyed during the purge of all things Aten :(

One of my lecturers did a study of slavery in Egypt - and came up empty-handed bar one image that might, maybe, have been someone selling people as slaves. It's a confused harbour scene though, so very inconclusive. The closest thing to slaves we have is indentured prisoners of war. The pyramids certainly weren't built by slaves, and if anything it's likely that the Hebrews were seen as skilled brickmakers - which would maybe have had them recruited to build the cities of Akhetaten and Pi-Ramses, both cities that their kings wanted built quickly and efficiently and favoured brick over stone. I can't see Egyptians persecuting people over religion - not when they were so quick to accept other foreign gods into their pantheon to soothe the people of Nubia, or other nations they'd conquered.

Abu Simbel is just breathtaking. It amazes me that the Egyptians were able to build it to the specifications of the sunrise hitting the sanctuary on set days... and when modern man moved and rebuilt it they couldn't - it's off by one day, if I remember correctly. Kom Ombo was the same - one of the roof plinths has fallen from the temple and modern man cannot fix it, the machinery can't get up there to do it. But somehow the Ancient Egyptians managed it. It's mind-boggling.

Liverpool was awesome! I did Egyptology there, so can't really speak for the Classics side of things, though I hear nothing but good stuff from my friends on the course. I thoroughly enjoyed my time there, so have no complaints about the uni or the city. My lecturers were (bar one) all fantastic, the libraries have some amazing books on antiquity, and the grounds are some of the nicest in the country. You'd enjoy it!

Oh, did you not hear about the possibility that they may have found his body?! I don't know if you recall, but there was a sarcophagus in the main room dedicated to Akhenaten at the Cairo musuem covered in gold with the face of the sarcophagus smashed in. I think they may have thought it to be Smenkare's, but they finally took it on for scanning, and it appears that the mummy inside is of older and of male stature. Now we can't say for SURE that it's Akhenaten, but it's gotten people rather excited! Or if had when I read it in a new book 'The Royal Mummies: Immortality in Ancient Egypt' I got for my mother for Christmas =D

And thats very intersting! Everytime I speak with my mother about it, she gets all upset and never has a clear argument against slavery in Egypt, mostly because she's so worked up over it! xD She hates it when people get their history wrong, and slavery at the time is a big thing for her I guess.

Was it easy to find a job after recieving your degree in Egyptology? It seems like a limited career pool, which is what I am worried about when I get my degree in Classical Studies.

Huh, no I missed that. I confess I didn't pay much attention in the Akhenaten/Tut section of the Cairo museum cos the tour guide was royalling pissing me off. Telling everyone Tut was definitely murdered by Ay, and just generally over-sensationalising everything. Rawr. Annoying man.

Heh, I haven't exactly used my Egyptology degree - I went straight into teaching English as a foreign language (though I did the course in Egypt!) and then went off to Japan to teach. I never intended to work in the field - I just found it interesting. Having said that, if I'm in the UK much longer before going back to Japan I'm probably going to start looking at museum work.

That would be incredibly annoying, I must admit. I was lucky that my tourguide was well informed about everything and actually CARED about the truth. Even if it meant questioning his own relgion.

Haha, I plan on teaching in Japan/Korea after I get my degree in History in Canada. Just take a year off between degrees to go somewhere new and do something different, you know? =D But museum work as well as writing is what I would LOVE to do, but it's a competitive field, well at least getting into a museum is. I might volunteer at the shoddy little museum I have in my home city for a while, just to appear in the radar system.

Also, do you mind if I add you as a friend? =)

The tour guide we had on the cruise Luxor to Aswan (Big Daddy, as we all ended up calling him) was AWESOME. I loved him. Sure, he simplified facts for the crowd, but he always came and talked translations with me too. Should have seen us reading all the coptic grafitti in some of the VoK tombs XD The tour guide we had in Cairo was a jerk. Who got Ammut's name wrong. And corrected me. *RAGE*

Good idea - any museum experience goes a long way in that field.

You certainly can, though I fear you'll find my rambling boring. Consider yourself likewise added!
